Reading Andy Roberts' lament for the Golden Lion pub in Romford reminded me that I had promised to post a new blog entry soon, so here it is. I've been made redundant by the firm that I worked for for just over thirty years. I was summoned to a meeting in the City office at 5:00pm on a Friday evening and told that I was one of a group of seven senior managers in my team, three of whom were going to be made redundant. We were told a lot of spurious guff about "consultation" and lack of alternative roles within the firm and advised that we were entering a 30 day &q

Continuing my cultural journey of recent months, I persuaded my Mum to get us tickets for something at the Northcott while I was visiting her in Exeter this weekend. We went to see a new play called The English Game, by Richard Bean, which made its debut in Guildford earlier this month. It's a portrait of a "typical" English club cricket team as previously described so graphically by Marcus Berkmann in his books "The Rain Men" and "The Zimmer Men". All the action takes place on the boundary of the cricket field, where the team gathers beforeha

I previously mentioned in the Forum that I was going to see this group. Last night, Mary and I saw them at The Forge in Basingstoke, a tiny auditorium nestled inside The Anvil, where a Queen Tribute Band was playing simultaneously. The sound-proofing and "crowd" management was so effective that we'd never have known if we hadn't been told. I've also posted most of the following in the other place:

As I put together a new collection for the car, I noticed there were quite a lot of songs featuring birds, so a made a themed collection by, with, about or inspired by birds: the highlights are Roy, obviously, and Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle, which reminds me of John Martyn in his echoplex days. I've got plenty of other bird songs that could make another themed collection but those would go back further into my collection. I think everything here has been acquired within the past year or two. Incidentally, I followed PAul's lead the other day and downloaded a do

Well, I removed Psycho Buddha and moved a few tracks from the partial CD6 to CD1, deleting the remaining tracks from CD6, so that it is a 5CD compilation: now it is near perfect . I particularly like the way that the alphabetical arrangement allows Henry Cow to follow Harvey Mandel, a veritable barrage of prog rock, and the Mississippis follow Lightning Hopkins and Maria Muldaur, with the brief interlude of the ethereal Marissa Nadler. It also allows me to work out who's playing when I play the CDs in the car!

So in the absence of the ability to post messages on the stormcock, big muff or whatevershebringswesing mailing lists, or indeed send personal emails at present, I'll just say what I want to say here...
A regular thread on whatevershebringswesing is "Lissning" or variations on that theme. I did a compilation recently of music I'd acquired recently but hadn't yet listened to. I was going to post a listing but can't find it... Oh bugger I'm falling apart.
Goodnight!
Bob

Apologies to anyone expecting me to reply to emails or announce Vines etc. My email system seems to be rebelling. I think it's all down to badly configured anti-virus and browser software, both of which were recently upgraded. I've had trouble with both cricinfo.com and cixonline.co.uk. The former I blame on its use of adservers, the latter on its being a non-Microsoft email system... so the other software seems to want to prevent it from doing what I want it to do. I don't know. Very frustrating. No doubt I'll get to the bottom of it eventual
