Just got an email off the Southbank which includes Roy amongst the participants in the above, an intriguing mixture of guests:-

"Bernard Butler, Mara Carlyle, Martin Carthy, Eric Clapton, Terry Cox, Donovan, Gordon Giltrap, Roy Harper, Wizz Jones, Lisa Knapp, Beverley Martin, Jacqui McShee, Ralph McTell, Robert Plant, Martin Simpson, Danny Thompson and Paul Wassif"

Love to go down myself but I can't get off work and I'm in Newcastle so snookered on the travel front unfortunately.

Gig of the decade and sold out! Unless I can hire a wheelchair and forge a disability pass?

For those that don't want to miss such an amazing event you can get in the main concourse free and go to top bar where there is a live stream of the auditorium concert on a screen in the corner. Very tempting to be in the presence of so many Gods in the Gods! May see you there...

Sounds superb (apart from that Clapton fella)
Lisa knapp is wonderful for those of you who haven't got Wild and Undaunted or Hidden Seam.

Great - I see from the above link it's to be filmed and "elements" will be used in a programme on BBC 4 in the new year.

I now have a spare ticket for this sold out event; it's not sat with us ( which may or may not be a good thing ) and is up in the top balcony ( a few rows behind us ) - the ticket price was £30; let us know if anyone wants to buy it off us ? As this board is moderated at the mo, it might be quicker to email me direct @ iam@bigchris.co.uk

Not that it will probably make any difference, but just spotted that the Bert Jansch tribute night ticket only cost my mate £25 ( not £30 ). My mate has someone who will gladly take the ticket for nothing ( bit of a tight ar*e ), but he'd rather sell it for something !!

Well you might be happy to hear ( though I wasn't ) that Clapton has pulled out of the event, as well as Roy.

James I've got a zappy little nappy

I like Bert Jansch, I haven't heard his full discography I mostly have his early stuff from the 60s and the Black Swan from 2006. “The Black Swan” and “Jack Orion” are among my favorites. John Renborn is also good to, his self titled debut album is amazing being his first album. Both are way better then Eric Clapton in my opinion.

I read from the Australian that Roy had withdrawn from the line-up It didn't say why but I have a idea. Roy has history of being a misunderstood musician and his current sticky situation reminds me of a Bert Jansch song called “It don't bother me”. On Bert's album It don't bother me Roy played additional guitar on “my lover” and sang lead vocals on “A man I'd rather be”

    You take my name
    And hang it high
    You paint my picture
    With colored lies
    But it don't bother me
    What you do
    No, oh no
    It just don't bother me

    You twist my words
    Like plaited reeds
    To mark your gain
    And help your needs
    But it don't bother me
    What you say
    No, oh no
    It just don't bother me

    What truth is told
    Of who I am
    Shall break the silence
    Of waters calm
    But it don't bother me
    Who I am
    No, oh no
    It just don't bother me

    But if was
    A beggar boy
    I'd sing of riches
    I could enjoy
But it, it don't bother me
    What they are
    No, oh no
    It just don't bother me

    I'm a thinkin' now
    I would rather hide
    Or turn my back
    And stand aside
But it, it don't bother me
    What I do
    No, oh no
    It just don't bother me

Don't let them bother you Roy! They may twist your words but you will sing on forever

Thanks for that James! Like you, I am way behind on BJ's discography and just have pinched a few bits of his acoustic instrumental stuff here and there....

There's still a whole panoply of stars performing, and still tempted; so I can boast that I was there in the presence of so many musos that have had such a major influence on my life. These days in my mundane jobs I go round singing their songs in my head! There is in fact, a song for most occasions, like Roy was saying there's the sound of the guitar for every mood...

Might see some of you in the top bar proudly wearing my RH tshirt !!

    ...gee even Gordon Giltrap!!

    A x

I'm not familiar with most of Bert Jansch's albums but in general I'm not a huge fan of instrumental finger-picking music, I prefer the ones he sings on. A few of his 70s albums are lovely - LA Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon, A Rare Conundrum.

I agree it was supposed to be sold out - but I've never been to any gig at the RFH and seen so many empty seats; 1/2 the boxes were empty and loads of empty seats at the sides. Perhaps the news of no Roy and/or Eric kept people away !?

So it wasn't sold out .... and it certainly wasn't the gig of the decade ... in fact it wasn't even the gig of the week for me (Dylan, Count Arthur Strong, Kim Churchill & Billy Bragg in past week) - it was ok, but not worth the 2 1/2 hours stuck in a traffic jam to get in their ( only 30 miles ). We were sat in the top balcony and because the BBC were recording it, they had some extra lights on the stage and one of them was directed straight up into the balcony - so we couldn't actually see anything - loads of people complained at the break, which got that sorted - but I'm about to write a snoty email off to the RFH - very unprofessional of them !!

Highlights for me ... were Donovan, Wizz Jones, Robert Plant, Neil Young ( via exclusive video clip ) and all of the female singers .... Martin Carthy was an absolute embarrassment ... think it may be time for him to retire !!
