Believe Digital (http://www.believedigital.com/) has secured an exclusive deal with Roy Harper to offer 20 of his albums digitally for the first time.

The catalogue includes 19 of his classic albums as well as a new compilation.

His catalogue was previously only available online via his own website and Believe will now distribute his music to leading digital stores from June 6, coinciding with Harper's 70th birthday.

The campaign will see four albums digitally reissued every three months.

Believe Digital UK MD Stephen King said, “Roy is a genuine original who cares deeply about his legacy and how it is exploited. He is trusting Believe to oversee the distribution of his music to mainstream online retailers for the first time and it is a task we don't take lightly. We are deeply honored to be working with an artist of his stature during this important new step in his stellar career.”

This new campaign will be launched on June 7th with a new compilation album entitled ‘Songs of
Love and Loss Volumes 1 and 2’ , followed by the release of four classic Roy Harper albums every 3 months over the course of the next 12 months.

The new compilation gets a good review in the Mirror weekend entertainment magazine "the Ticket" which I was just reading in the cafe next door to work. It is described as a double CD, so I guess it must be imminent for release in physical form.

Not sure if this is getting a proper CD release or not but the promo version was certainly in that format.

Songs Of Love And Loss (Compilation)

    Hello there,

I know there's been a bit of confusion over the 'Songs Of Love And Loss' compilation. I'm really sorry about that. Guess I'm just a bit too PC for my own good ;-) …been waiting to time our own announcement with an official press release for the digital release but… it appears that the PR strategy for that release isn't quite what we're used to so here's the lowdown. Hope it clears things up.

Earlier this year Science Friction signed a deal with Believe Digital to release the catalogue to the digital market place for the first time. A compilation was required as an introduction to lead the release campaign. The rest of the catalogue will be released in batches of four over the coming months.

'Songs of Love And Loss' is now also available on our own site in FLAC and MP3 format. I don't intend to promote this compilation to the fan base but it is a lovely vibe and some will want it I suppose. The download includes a digital booklet with notes and lyrics. You will see the year 2011 listed after a few of the titles on iTunes etc. That is strictly for publishing purposes. The tracks have been remastered but not re-recorded. Yet…

The compilation will also be released, in September, on cd. It will be packaged in a lovely, good quality, double cd digipack with booklet notes, lyrics etc. We have licensed this release to Union Square Music Ltd. and it will appear on their Salvo label. This will be available from our online shop as well.

The digital distribution campaign and the licensing of the release on cd, along with it being his 70th year, should hopefully see Roy featured quite heavily in the various media outlets.

Again, hope this clears things up.

    All the best for now,

    Tracy

Will Flashes be in it's original double album status or will some of it still be as bonus tracks on Valentine?
And will In between every line include Hangman?

to be honest we hadn't thought of restoring 'flashes' to the original track listing. unless roy has some objection, that will be done for the believe release.. if not before.

as far as the bonus tracks on 'valentine'.. i don't believe they exist any longer as bonus tracks. roy never liked the idea of adding bonus tracks to an album and had them taken off.

that's a great version of 'hangman' and this is something that we really need to do, however, to do it properly we'd have to go back to the original tapes which are in storage, off site, and they require baking before being transferred to digital media (expensive and time consuming for the amount of return expected). there are other options but those too require studio time and remastering. i'm sure it will get done but it's been difficult to make it any kind of a priority. hopefully it can get done for the believe release (not sure where it is in the schedule) if not before.

will obviously post news of those changes here.

    best,

    tracy

Sounds like great things are happening, now, and also in the future, I know you must get asked a lot Tracy, but will there be a new album to coincide with the 70th birthday gig? Now that would be something, a massive cherry on the cake of a terrific year for Roy fans!

    Best regards, Shaun..

Well just for the laugh ( & give Roy some more money towards his retirement ) I downloaded the new compilation from play.com - BUT two things wrong with the download :

    1. It didn't include any "booklet with notes and lyrics"
    2. All the tracks started with "Roy Harper " then the track name i.e. NO number, so when all the tracks are saved to your hard-drive - they are listed in alphabetical order and not the order that they appear on the "promo" CD - a bit of a pain really !!

So much of a pain - that I've managed to buy one of the promo CD's off eBay !

Talking of CD's - just noticed play.com are now accepting orders for the official release - http://goo.gl/XXFzU

ps… what do you mean by 'promo' cd..?

    Will do .... thanks !!

Well it must be the CD(s) that were used by the people who wrote reviews about the new "album" like the folk from the Mirror i.e. like this one - http://goo.gl/OiiBG

And available in higher quality FLAC as well of course... perhaps we can hope that people will one day realise that mp3 isn't that good, sonically :)

I agree, I just hope it's sooner rather than later Paul, there's just no comparison to FLAC.

    mp3 = :puke:

If you download the FLAC. and listen to it on a suitable player when at home can you also transfer it to iTunes to listen to on my iPod?

Yeah may be so ... and perhaps eventually people will realise there are more choices than iTunes !!
