Podcast 5
Fantastic again - El Rose was as shy & retiring as always - which made her an excellent guest!
Thanks for reading out the Festive Cock Top 10... of the top 10 that you hadn't heard I would really recommend The National (or any of their albums) - it was my number one vote. They are a very talented, mellow american indie-guitar band - excellent lyrics - well worth checking out. They got quite a few votes from Mr Bill & the American contingent - so I'm glad they are well known at home....
On the 'stormcock' reissue note - I think half the people didn't bother voting for it because they were sure it would win without their vote (reminds me of the Kinnock election...)
& the other half didn't vote for it because they were unsure about voting for reissues - I tried to make it clear but obviously not clear enough - I received 6 emails after the top 30 went out saying 'I didn't realise you could vote for reissues... I would have voted completely differently etc etc'
Anyhow - I'll try to do better next year.
Thanks again for all your hard work - I really look forward to the podcasts & thanks again to Purple - hatted El Rose.
cheers
James
Another great podcast Paul!
And (purple) hats off to 'designated office hippie', fellow Duranie and all-round top bird El Rose - I *loved* this interview as I suspected I would!
Green Man
Finally got round to listening to Podcast 5 and enjoyed it a lot, El sounds like great a hoot and up for a good old argument, which brings me round to the reason for this here post.
The Green Man
I was suprised that neither El or Paul mentioned "The Monster" which I think is an outstanding song both musically and lyrically. I remember at the time I sent my one and only piece of fan mail, an email sent via Roy's website on how on the first listen of Green Man "The Monster" sent shivers down my spine. Roy I assume also still likes it as he played it at both of gigs I made it to last year.
I also have to say I like Glasto, New England and Rushing Camelot. So maybe I'm just a hopless case and my musical taste is in a place where the sun don't shine :) . Considering I also love Pan, Methane Zone, Watford Gap and Exercising Some Control. On the minus side Roy's singing in a number of places through the album makes me squirm, mostly some of the high notes as well as a tad to much virbrato in places. And finnaly on Green Man I like Solar Wind Sculpures to but thats cos I can manage to paly the main theme if not the fiddly bit at the beginning :)
And another thing, on the Nick front I have never been distracted or annoyed by Nick's "production" on his studio albums. In fact I get a lot of enjoyment listening to what Nick has put into the songs with the use of all the layers of guitars, voice and percussion.
Well that's my tuppence worth. All the best and keep the podcasts coming.
An English Rose
Wonderful to hear El in full – forthright – flow, top entertainment.
Yeah, live albums are certainly a good introduction. Double Life is a great calling card for Nick.
Good to know that Percy was eventually won over in the interview, despite the hilarious wearing of the 'Jugula' t-shirt.
Didn't know (or had forgotten) the inside story of the Harry Rope and Sounds debacle.
Admirably honest about her feelings on the Green Man; I don't necessarily agree, but it is, perhaps, a more 'comfortable' album.
With you on 'Work of Heart', it has special memories for me and Sue.
When you qualify, El, you'd be our first choice if we ever needed representation, certainly never short of suitably constructive retort. (grin)
