Last night I went along to the launch event for Nick Harper's forthcoming DVD "Love is Music". We were treated to a preview screening of the feature in our own little theatre, along with a bar and the opportunity to talk to Nick himself along with director Mike Last and of course all the other assorted loonies that had come along.
I don't want to give too much away about the content of the DVD itself as you will enjoy it a lot more coming to it cold. The basic structure is of a mixture of songs and interview snippets. The songs are taken from various sources including live footage from festivals and concert halls, along with studio and garden footage and one or two other locations. Sometimes music video tends to be somewhat over-produced, so that you get completely distracted by all the visual trickery and fancy graphics, but in this case the visuals are subtly done and serve to enhance the songs. There are some very nice segments where a camera has been attached to the guitar so that you get a close up view of Nicks fingerwork. There are also occasional split screen effects where you can see Nick performing and at the same time see shots of the crowd reacting to the music. It works very nicely.
All the interviews are done in a humourous and self-deprecating way, with interviewees ranging from Roy Harper, Glenn Tilbrook, Levellers/Drunk in Public personnel, road crew, fans, and others. They give a good perspective on why they enjoy Nicks work and how it manages to communicate raw emotion to the listener. I've always found it very hard to try to categorise Nick's stuff (and indeed Roy's too). You can't pigeon-hole it by saying "acoustic singer songwriter" or "nutter acoustic punk" or "folk music". This DVD conveys the variety of musical styles, and the way he can switch from being deadly serious one moment to utter hilarity the next. One of the most bizarre yet telling interviewees is DJ Mike Reid who has some funny and accurate things to say.
The disc will serve two purposes. For the existing fan I think it will be appreciated in its own right as a collection of great songs, with very good visuals and also some very effective use of surround sound effects. For potential fans, and for use as a promotional tool, it's a fast track to getting a hook on what Nick is about and why he deserves success.
Glenn notes at one stage that he has moved back from being in the mainstream insanity of the pop music business into the "cottage industry" side of it. He notes that Nick has, on the other hand, started with nothing and, without the support of a major label and largely ignored by the "mainstream" music industry, has made it on his own terms, making a living out of his music and not compromising his art. I cannot help but agree of course, but I also believe that Nick deserves a wider audience - and indeed, that they deserve him. Think of all the Jeff Buckley fans for example who, if they had only heard of Nick, would certainly be into it.
When I arrived at the screening Nick was at the bar and immediately bought me a beer. "Thanks, you're a star" I said. "Not yet" he answered.
Let's hope that the new DVD helps spread the word.
Finally, thanks to the other fans that I meet, I really enjoyed our chats! And thank you to the lovely HarperPR for my invitation.

Nick and Nick (Cunliffe)

A big fan
you and your ******* camera ...
I was probably an easy target towards the end of the night ... too much ( if that's possible ) beer and not enough food !!
That picture of you was at
That picture of you was at the start of the night, Chris!
Ah ... not the one where I'm
Ah ... not the one where I'm having a deep meaningful discussion with Nick !!
That's not me!
I don't think that looks like me - who was that person masquerading as the PR!!!!! Ha!
Thanks for coming everyone who did.
Hope you all now go out and buy a copy. To paraphrase Mike Read, it could be the first time you'll hear thrash acoustic!!!!
talking of thrash acoustic ...
in case Paul forgets again ... the act I mentioned months ago ... which really is thrash acoustic ( ie they play thrash metals tunes on two accoustic guitars ) is Rodrigo y Gabriela ( http://www.rodgab.com/ )
Aauuugh! (re Rodrigo y Gabriela)
I tried to get a ticket to see them in Boston Tuesday night and I couldn't get one for love or money - DAMN!
Not sure why this wasn't under Chris' comment haha
But on the DVD...
THANK YOU to everyone for the reports - I love reading spoilers usually but yeah you're right, I am looking forward to the surprise...
I am almost dying with excitement. No, seriously

ps - if there is ANY justice in the world, this will be the break Nick deserves! I hope there is justice, though I suspect there isn't, cos if I hear one more James ****t song in a store here, I will wreak mayhem
Rodrigo y Gabriela at Latitude!
Chris
Did you see that Rodrigo y Gabriela have been added to the Latitude bill? See you in the moshpit! they've also added Dylan Moran to the comedy tent which already had an excellent line-up! The whole thing could do with a Harper or two but apart from that ......
No I didn't know ...
but thanks for the heads-up ... that is excellent news !! Just went to the site ( just to check you weren't telling porkies ) ...and also noticed that TINARIWEN are also on the lineup .... don't know if they were there from the start, but I wouldn't have known who they were a couple of weeks back .... I bought their latest CD only last Thursday, due to an article in a HMV magazine ... and really like them now (!!) .... looks like IT WILL be a damn good festival !!
Cheers,
Chris.
Tinariwen on telly
They are on the first of the new series of 'Later' on Friday - along with CSS and The Hold Steady who are both also on at Latitude!
Latitude
Just thought I would update this by mentioning that Chris and I did both get to Latitude though I did manage to miss Tinariwen. Had an absolutely wonderful weekend there with my 2 lads (in me avatar) and we managed to see most of what we were looking forward to - in their case it was mostly in the comedy tent. I certainly did better than Chris who I finally bumped into at the toilets when nearly everybody else had left and who had managed to see a grand total of 2 bands in 3 days! I think that was largely due to disappointment in the beer being sold there, something which we did agree on. Apart from that, I thought Latitude was a tremendous event, well worth looking out for next year, as long as the Mean Fiddler don't try to grow it too quickly.
2 bands in 3 days ...
well that's one more than the three mates I was with !! We don't really go to festivals for the music ... more for the craic of sitting around a campfire talking b******cks all the time and just chilling out ... yes drinking our own beer ... a nice drop of Skol Super at 9% !!!
On Friday, saw Damien Rice ( as loads of the DeBarras crew recommended him ! ) ... also joined on stage with the Magic Numbers ... together they sounded ( to me ) just like The Band !!
On Saturday, saw the amazing Rodrigo Y Gabriela ... superb !!
On Sunday ... went into Southwold for a paddle in the sea ... and got pissed on Broadside in the Lord Nelson pub ... wicked !!
Then spent 3 days camping ... in probably the best campsite ever .. The Orchard Campsite ... complete with more campfires and red wine !!
Then spent 4 days at the worst ever festival we'd been too ( and I reckon I've been to about 20 different festivals over the years; and of course multiple times ) ... I doubt we will ever go back to the Eastern Haze Festival again .... I could write a complete list of things SO wrong with that festival ... but I'll save that for their forum !! Just to say it was Crap !! But luckily (?) ... Nick ( headlining acoustic stage last night ) was superb ... in front of about 200 people ... which may not sound like much, but the Saturday headliners ( Ozric Tentacles ) only got about double that on the main stage !! He was so good ... and the crowd so loved him, that he came back on for a Real encore ( ie the orgainisers were trying to get the house lights on and us out !! ) of Temple ... it made the whole trip to EH ... just about bareable ... thanks Nick !!
Finally...
Hi Chris
Thought you might like to know I finally got hold of their eponymous album... it's excellent! Thanks very much for the recommendation.
