Roy Harper, 5th November 2011, Royal Festival Hall London

pd's picture

Roy is going to celebrate his 70th year in style at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Tickets will be on general sale on Monday 23rd May. Full details at the Royal Festival Hall website:

To celebrate his 70th birthday, Roy Harper performs a one-off concert with very special guests.

Part of the wave of troubadours who came of age in the folk clubs of London in the mid-1960s, Roy Harper is regarded as one of the icons of his generation. Albums such as Stormcock are praised as masterpieces and throughout his career he has been hailed by musicians and critics alike, with Led Zeppelin naming 'Hats off to Roy Harper' for him and Pink Floyd inviting him to perform lead vocals on 'Have a Cigar'. His fans read like a who's who of popular music from the last 40 years and include Kate Bush and Pete Townshend, as well as a new generation of musicians ranging from Joanna Newsom to Fleet Foxes and Jim O'Rourke.

The nominal start time is 7.30pm. It hardly seems like 10 years to me since we were celebrating his 60th at exactly the same venue, and those that were there or have the CD of the event will know that it was a magical evening. The Bedford Strings will be in attendance again, but there's no information at this stage about any other guests that may take part in the proceedings.

Hope to see you there!

Tickets are on sale now at £195 each. Now I am sure some readers will have fainted by this point! However... a similar event took place in December with Van Der Graaf Generator (I didn't go) and the consensus was that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and those that did go were full of nothing but praise for the event.

Hope to see you there.

Paul.

UPDATE: 19/1/2011, the gig has now sold out.

Hiding from Heaven by Elliot Knapp (1:38:52)

Elliot writes:

I learned piano starting at age 8 and picked up guitar at age 15, starting to write songs soon thereafter.  My earliest influences included Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan, followed by Roy and so on.  I played with a band in college called The Same Old Rock which sort of organically dissolved after releasing one album of relatively mainstream folk-rock.  Since then I've retreated a bit more from performing, focusing on a more distinctive and idiosyncratic type of song and lyric writing that focuses mainly on acoustic guitar and dense poetic lyrics.  During my hermitage I've absorbed increasingly more different types of music and artists and in my own music I've made attempts to channel what I've learned from these eclectic influences through the lens of my own personal style without stealing too much from anyone or tying myself too strongly to one genre.  In Not-Even-Anything Land is the result of about 10 months of recording in my apartment and some in  my parents' basement--during this time I didn't play out at all and am now peeping my bleary eyes out of my cave in attempts to connect my extremely fully-realized but intensely personal product with other human beings.

Nick Harper "Instrumental" - new version, digital download

pd's picture

Taken from Harperspace.com:

7 Sep 2010

It's true I've been yanking the buttons and faders in the studio and cranking up the old 'Instrumental' masters and having a bit of fun in the process. It's funny to hear a snapshot of who you were 10 years previous...at times highlighting the follies of youth and at others engendering nice little surprises. For instance after putting the levels up a little to try and match Titchy Striker (Jermaine Defoe??) or whatever his name is I could hear the points in 'Swansong' where I'm reaching for the plectrum on my knee between the picky bits - probably a very good reason I've never played that one live (since Glenn Tilbrook said I should stand up and be a man..well I did the first bit..). The most moving part of the remixing though was when I turned up 'The Whack 'n' Riddle Tree' and right at the end you can just hear my daughter Lily saying "Dada" just outside the studio door...I nearly cried.. She was 3 I think. That song is based on a game made up by the most fantastic teacher any child could wish to have - Lewis Richardson, whose idiosyncratic curriculum was based on trying to get us to think and whose view of the world still translates well nearly 40 years on...blimey. He went on to write a lovely little book called 'The Eye of the White Horse' which was a child's eye view of life in Wiltshire a few generations back, which I would swear was part of the inspiration for the poem on 'Treasure Island' called 'A Wiltshire Tale' even though I read his book after I wrote the verse.. Where was I? Oh yeah 'Whack 'n' Riddle': The bowler bowls and the batsman whacks the ball up in to the tree and tries to make it 'home' before it riddles through the branches and is caught..or not..by the hordes of eager catchers..immense laughter had by all if I remember rightly..

Keep going people! Love Harp xx

I bought and downloaded this yesterday and it's really worth the £5 even if you have the original CD.
