About Nick
![]() Taken from Harperspace.com:
It's true I've been yanking the buttons and faders in the studio and cranking up the old 'Instrumental' masters and having a bit of fun in the process. It's funny to hear a snapshot of who you were 10 years previous...at times highlighting the follies of youth and at others engendering nice little surprises. For instance after putting the levels up a little to try and match Titchy Striker (Jermaine Defoe??) or whatever his name is I could hear the points in 'Swansong' where I'm reaching for the plectrum on my knee between the picky bits - probably a very good reason I've never played that one live (since Glenn Tilbrook said I should stand up and be a man..well I did the first bit..). The most moving part of the remixing though was when I turned up 'The Whack 'n' Riddle Tree' and right at the end you can just hear my daughter Lily saying "Dada" just outside the studio door...I nearly cried.. She was 3 I think. That song is based on a game made up by the most fantastic teacher any child could wish to have - Lewis Richardson, whose idiosyncratic curriculum was based on trying to get us to think and whose view of the world still translates well nearly 40 years on...blimey. He went on to write a lovely little book called 'The Eye of the White Horse' which was a child's eye view of life in Wiltshire a few generations back, which I would swear was part of the inspiration for the poem on 'Treasure Island' called 'A Wiltshire Tale' even though I read his book after I wrote the verse.. Where was I? Oh yeah 'Whack 'n' Riddle': The bowler bowls and the batsman whacks the ball up in to the tree and tries to make it 'home' before it riddles through the branches and is caught..or not..by the hordes of eager catchers..immense laughter had by all if I remember rightly.. Keep going people! Love Harp xx I bought and downloaded this yesterday and it's really worth the £5 even if you have the original CD.

Please do go and visit the Peru Rocks website. You can leave messages that will be sent to the expedition, read a daily diary, look at photos and video from the trip, and most importantly donate to the charity. I think this is a really worthwhile endeavour and I wish Nick, and everyone taking part, all the very best. Let's hope this goes smoothly and generates lots of money for LoveHopeStrength. From the site: Peru Rocks is the latest concert from the Love Hope Strength Foundation. 65 musicians, cancer survivors and supporters are setting out upon a 4 day trek along the Inca Trail in the Andes. The musical journey symbolizes the “Climb Back from Cancer (TM)” of millions of survivors around the globe, and celebrates the lives of those we lost. We will end our journey in the Inca Ruins of Machu Picchu where we will celebrate the power of Love, Hope and Strength. The mission is to raise money and awareness for cancer care in Peru. We will be working in conjunction with ALINEN to purchase lifesaving equipment for INEN, the main cancer center in Peru. We will also be moving forward with plans to set up a Love Hope Strength chapter in Peru in order to continue a national plan to educate and raise awareness of cancer and promote early detection. Learn more about our next concert/climb by joining the LHS Army. |

All proceeds go directly to the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan and the Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor where Mike Peters (a two times cancer survivor),was diagnosed and successfully treated for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) in 2005/06. Mike Peters is still undergoing long term maintenance treatment at the Alaw Unit with a view to finding a cure under the watchful eye of Dr. David Edwards who has been Mike's haemotologist throughout both of his cancer battles. Dr. Edwards will also be accompanying Mike to the summit of Snowdon. Snowdon Rocks 2 is promoted through the LOVE HOPE STRENGTH Foundation, a charity formed by Mike Peters to raise awareness and funding for cancer care both locally and globally, with a further series of world wide events that will continue throughout 2008. In particular, 'Peru Rocks', which will take place between October 8th and 17th in the form of a 4 day trek through the High Andes with acoustic concerts at the world famous Macchu Picchu Citadel and finale in the Peruvian capital city of Lima. Last year's event on Snowdon raised a staggering £43,000 (far more than Mike Peters ever imagined), and some of the additional funding was distributed throughout cancer care organisations in North Wales such as Ty Gobaith, St David's Hospice in Llandudno and St. Kentigerns Hospice in St. Asaph.

For my part I expect to see him at the Trowbridge festival ("village pump") and the Levellers gig at the Royal Albert Hall. As I've said before, it's very much worth making the effort to go out and see Nick live. He is a very accomplished performer and often is able to bring the songs to life in a way that transcends what you may already have heard on the recordings. Tour dates are here. Bring your friends! |

If you haven't seen Nick live, you owe it to yourself to go and see him if you can. His gigs are astounding; he has a massive stage presence, great sense of humour, and a guitar style that makes other musicians green with envy. If you go to a gig and fancy writing a review, we'd love to read them in the forums here. A full list of tour dates can be found at harperspace along with lots of other stuff about Nick, including an online store, plenty of free downloads of sample tracks, pictures, and also information about the amazing trip to Mt Everest that he undertook last year with Love Hope Strength. Nick is an amazing acoustic artist and deserves wider recognition. If you're still unconvinced have a listen to the Nick Harper Special podcast that I did recently for some sample tracks and an interview with Nick. |

![]() It's been a great week for Nick Harper as he featured on both BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio 2 this week.
Well done on both of those Nick, it's great to see you getting this sort of coverage. |

I liked the comment that people can be "more relaxed" at festivals... It's only brief but you can listen to it here.

The DVD of the Everest Rocks project is now available!

Nick Harper has a new tour coming up for 2008, starting in May and running through to November in Norway. Along the way he includes a trip up Mount Snowdon for
Nick has started his 2008 "Dig on Down" tour and as I write this he did the first performance last night (Jan 31) at Mr Kyps in Poole. The tour goes through to mid-March so there is plenty of opportunity for those that live in the UK to see him.
Firstly, the Wales show. This features an excellent interview and session pieces, and you can tell that Alan Thompson is really in tune with Nicks music, and rather taken aback by his guitar skills.
Nick was featured in a brief phone interview on BBC Radio Merseyside on November 14th 2007. He discussed his approach to songwriting, his influences, and of course the trip to Everest and his entry in the Guinness book of records.
