Roy Harper, 5th November 2011, Royal Festival Hall London

Roy is going to celebrate his 70th year in style at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Tickets will be on general sale on Monday 23rd May. Full details at the Royal Festival Hall website:

To celebrate his 70th birthday, Roy Harper performs a one-off concert with very special guests.

Part of the wave of troubadours who came of age in the folk clubs of London in the mid-1960s, Roy Harper is regarded as one of the icons of his generation. Albums such as Stormcock are praised as masterpieces and throughout his career he has been hailed by musicians and critics alike, with Led Zeppelin naming 'Hats off to Roy Harper' for him and Pink Floyd inviting him to perform lead vocals on 'Have a Cigar'. His fans read like a who's who of popular music from the last 40 years and include Kate Bush and Pete Townshend, as well as a new generation of musicians ranging from Joanna Newsom to Fleet Foxes and Jim O'Rourke.

The nominal start time is 7.30pm. It hardly seems like 10 years to me since we were celebrating his 60th at exactly the same venue, and those that were there or have the CD of the event will know that it was a magical evening. The Bedford Strings will be in attendance again, but there's no information at this stage about any other guests that may take part in the proceedings.

Hope to see you there!

Tickets are on sale now at £195 each. Now I am sure some readers will have fainted by this point! However... a similar event took place in December with Van Der Graaf Generator (I didn't go) and the consensus was that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and those that did go were full of nothing but praise for the event.

Hope to see you there.

Paul.

UPDATE: 19/1/2011, the gig has now sold out.

LoveHopeStrength charity treks in 2009

pd's picture

Many readers will already be aware that Nick Harper has a strong link with LoveHopeStrength, the cancer charity that has and continues to undertake many great fundraising activities. If you're interested in getting involved they have some events coming up in 2009:

Love Hope Strength Foundation UK is pleased to announce two charity treks for 2009.

Event registration packs for Rhondda and Snowdon Rocks can be downloaded at http://www.lovehopestrengthfoundation.co.uk or by telephoning 0781 4404877.

Snowdon Rocks – Saturday, 4 July 2009

On Saturday, 4 July 2009, Mike Peters, the recently royal appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Clwyd, will once again host 'Snowdon Rocks' for a third year running. This follows on from Mike's recent successful mission to Machu Picchu for Peru Rocks.

The first Snowdon Rocks in 2007 raised over £40,000 which was shared between The North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, The Alaw Unit, Ysbyty Gwynedd and North Wales hospices at St. Kentigerns, St. David's and Ty Gobaith. In 2008, the second 'Snowdon Rocks' went one better and raised even more funding (£45,000) which is once again being distributed throughout Cancer Care North Wales.

'Snowdon Rocks 3' (Sponsored by Mackenzie Jones Solicitors of St. Asaph) will involves a walk up the famous Llanberis / Railway Path with a very special acoustic concert at the summit with plenty of surprises throughout the day.

"The exciting thing about getting involved in Snowdon Rocks," says Mike, "is that you get to see where your money goes. So far, the money raised can be seen in the newly built Eira suite at the North Wales Cancer Centre which will be opened officially in February. This suite was built directly with the money from last year's Snowdon Rocks event, together with local man, Kevin Gaskell's incredible fund raising efforts at the North Pole."

"Cancer is the number one killer of mankind in the world today" continues Mike Peters, " and as I can testify, we are very, very fortunate to have world class cancer care on our doorstep in North Wales. Each and every one of us will have cause to deal with this dreaded disease at some point in our lifetime.

All proceeds from 'Snowdon Rocks 3' will once again go directly to Cancer Care in North Wales, which diagnosed and successfully treated Mike Peters (a two times cancer survivor) for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) in 2005/06 and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (1995). Mike Peters is still undergoing long term maintenance treatment at the Alaw Unit, Ysybyty Gwynedd with a view to finding a cure under the watchful eye of Dr. David Edwards who has been Mike's haemotologist throughout both of his cancer battles. Dr David Edwards said: “Mike’s courage in battling his illness has been remarkable and he is an inspiration to us all. His efforts will mean that crucial research projects can be continued and new equipment can be bought for both cancer units at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd which will allow us to improve patient treatments and facilities still further.”

Love Hope Strength Foundation is a charity formed by Mike Peters to raise awareness and create funding for cancer care both locally and globally with a series of world wide events such as Everest Rocks (2007), Peru Rocks at Machu Picchu (2008) and in late September 2009, Mike will lead a 30 strong team to Africa for Kilimanjaro Rocks.

RHONDDA ROCKS – SATURDAY, 27 JUNE 2009

Due to public demand, a second Welsh event named 'Rhondda Rocks' (27 June) is being added to the list of fund raising walks hosted by Mike Peters in 2009.

"It is by popular demand that an event is being staged in South Wales as Rhondda Rocks", says Mike Peters. "A lot of Alarm fans from South Wales have supported Snowdon Rocks and have asked me whilst walking, if I would host an event in South Wales so that they could involve more of their own community and directly support the cancer centres that are situated in South Wales. Because of this I'm sure Rhondda Rocks will be a huge success and hopefully grow into another annual event."

Snowdon Rocks / Rhondda Rocks already has the support of BBC Wales and producer Darren Broome will be helping with media coverage of the event and also using his influence by inviting some of the more well known members of Wales music community to take part in proceedings. Dave Driscoll of P4 Music who is one of Wales principal concert promoters is also behind the staging and organisation of both 'Snowdon and Rhondda Rocks'.

About Stormcock

"Stormcock" is an Internet community set up for fans of both Roy Harper and his son Nick Harper. It started in 1990, before many people had even heard of the Internet let alone got high speed connections from home, when I worked at London University. It was set up as an Internet Mailing list. This is an old fashioned, though still extremely popular, way to have online discussions, via email.
