Was only going to one night this week with Kings of Leon and Glasvegas at 02, but went back for second helpings: the lure of those Nashville boys was too great (even though second night meant cancelling The Script)! Go and see 'em at least once. They don't talk a lot, but boy do they look good - ha - and the songs aren't bad either. Loved Glasvegas too.

Saw them in Portree last night. Excellent - especially a pretty manic electric bassist.
The real pain was that the audience outnumbered the band, but only just. It was a pathetic turn out.

GLASTONBURY!
I wasn't planning on it, but a friendly persuader won on a late call Saturday morning and, well, since I was assured getting in was taken care of, how could I refuse!
Still en route home, but oh, what a fab couple of days. Definitely THE place to be this weekend. So many good acts.
Springsteen - awesome. For a guy nearing pensioner age, he can sure rock it. As did Tom Jones. Bon Iver - not as I'd imagined at all and definitely want to see him again.
And Blur, oh Blur...Damon was crying at the end of To The End - and so was I! Very emotional. I knew all the words to Out of Time too, even though I'm not a Blur fan! And sorry non-smokers, but Alex James with low slung guitar and cigarette in mouth did look the epitome of cool...
Caught surprise appearance from Glenn Tilbrook, with his little boy helping dad out on percussion as well...ahhh!

And Lily Allan had a fag on as well - friends thought it was OK as it was an outdoor stage, but I maintained that a stage is a 'workplace', hence smoking is illegal.
Whatever - don't forget to post your Glasto memories on GigMemories  lol

Your friend, or Jon?:D He's certainly raving!:blushing:
Has your friend taken you along to see the band? Definitely in my top list to see over and over. First caught them a couple of years ago at Reading, didn't know who they were, but was hooked. Jez Lowe and Kate Bramley, Portree last night.
Not boring at all - great music in fact.
But the boring repeat is my having to report that, whereas last week there were about 24 of us to listen to Ivan Drever, last night there were just 16 to hear two extremely good musicians. The hall holds 180 and is, potentially, a great venue.
I don't know who was more embarrassed or mystified, them or us.

Wonderful gig in my youthful stomping ground. So many memories like pebbles on the beach.Even Shep Wooley was there compering whom I 'd seen perform in the exact same venue in the Sixties before Ken Russell's film crew on Tommy set burnt it down. However didn't realise it had conflagrated twice before and David Bowie, Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Genesis had played there.

Will post some pics when processed. Nice to have the company of ST & PS but no PF [WP] who lives very locally like I used to. He was probably out training for his charity run and avoiding tempting unfit wet places?
Jane's face started to get redder and redder blowing her whistle, I thought she was going to explode! She said Gillie is recouperating well after her serious accident.

The Twang! I can honestly say, hand on heart, last night rocked to the rafters of Brum's o2 Academy. Even before they took to the stage the crowds - 3000 of them - were roaring and chanting. Every single person danced and sang along throughout 15 numbers. Very emotional during Either Way, which is just a classic song and everyone knows by heart. Stonking 3 song encore and even 5 minutes after that people still wanted more. The hottest gig too I have probably ever been to: everyone was dripping wet - literally!
And Chris, I did pass on your comment to Saunders about liking the album more now and that they gave you a lift. He said to say he's made up about that and thanks; it means a lot to hear that from fans.
They are lovely guys - underneath the image, especially Phil and Saunders. We all partied down a Jewellery Quarter hostelry after the show, then did a follow-that-cab-and-where-are-we-going trip around Brum ending up at 5am singing in Saunders's garden!

an album launch party for Mumford & Sons. In a barn - somewehere in Hertfordshire (Standon ?) - straw on the floor, bales of hay lying around etc etc.
Lots of fun it was too despite it taking 2 and a half hours to get to.
Buses were arranged from Kings Cross to the farm, and back again after the gig. Plenty of guests of the band got up and did their party piece - Laura Marling sang Jolene with them, Pete Roe (sp?), their sound guy, somebody calling himself King Charles (maybe mistaken about that) all did songs. And then there was a barn dance/hoedown type thing. By which time even Laura Marling was smiling...........
The album looks set to chart in the top 5 this week so it looks like a successful year for the band.

Caught The Twang last night at the Wedgewood Rooms in wild wild Pompey! Gutted that I missed the opener (due to a little er, 'problem' at the door:closedeyes:) Sound of Guns, but hoping they'll be on for Koko tomorrow (was still being decided). SOG were voted band of the week in the Guardian - I think they were described as sounding like 'early Alarm'! Nice guys too - from da 'pool, like! - had a chat with them afterwards. They seemed to know me as well - must be the Twitter mafia, haha.
The Twang were good but not as good as sometimes, and Phil having had the throat infection, was still not 100% fit. He kept his jacket on cos his mum had told him to so he didn't get a chill after his throat infection (bless!). I think he'd taken it off though by the time the beer was thrown at him - such a sign of affection.:confused1: Quite a few people there that I spoke to who had never seen or heard The Twang before - which was evident by pockets of non-singing in the crowd, which is unusual.

Three Twangs in four nights last week, plus no sleep Thur and Fri nights and review writing, has done for me! Now have the Twang bug they'd all been down with - and somehow have to find the energy to bounce again at Norwich tomorrow night!
But oh, it's been good. Slightly less rowdy night at Portsmouth was followed by Camden Koko on Thursday. Anyone who knows the venue will understand what it was like to see all the multi-tiered balconies packed and buzzin up to the rafters. Amazing sight. Support from Little Comets, who reminded me of Friendly Fires, and look like they could be big next year. Then Friday Brighton. Nice venue the Concorde 2, right on the seafront. Large room holding about 500. Sold out so was as full as could be. The best of the 3 shows, definitely. I just love those guys.

Oh Chris, I didn't actually recommend personally. It was more the vibe and talk that's been buzzin on them.
I did finally get to see Liverpool outfit Sound of Guns last night at The Waterfront in Norwich where they opened for The Twang. Bit more rocky and quite enjoyable. Whether they sound as the Guardian described them like an early Alarm, couldn't say, haven't really listened to the Alarm.
Final tour night for The Twang. Mad, mental, buzzin. Read my tweets on the Twitter link below for a bit of the flavour, so won't repeat again. :D But that is positively the first and last time I attempt tweeting during a gig: trying to do that, sing, dance, watch and drink all together was lunacy!
Not the best Twang gig (Phil said at one point, 'This is all turning into a bit of a shambles!'), as they were quite drunk to start, but blimey was it the funniest!
Nice gesture from them in putting a couple of bottles of brandy behind the bar for folks to all have a wee dram on them, by way of apology for having cancelled the original date there on 11th. And made my night when at the end of the finale when Phil and Saunders come off and leave the two guitarists and drummer to finish song, Phil spotted me, headed over with a hug and asked me how I was, was I alright (as he knew I was laid low with cold germs and not feeling good). I was so touched by that little gesture and concern.:blushing: They've been so kind to me, Phil especially, in their generosity and hospitality after the shows, and I so appreciate it, because they don't have to be. I'm nobody, just a fan, albeit maybe an obsessive mono-maniacal one, lol!

Saw her hours ago at a small but excellent venue in Skokie, Illinois (10 min. from my home. About 100 shy of a full house --600-700 seats).
Shawn has a tremendous voice, pure tone, writes her own songs and plays the guitar currently in a one-woman acoustic show. I got her first CD in 1989 and wanted to get caught up on her music. Her double-grammy (record & song) "Sunny Came Home" was released in 1996 -- my date and I are still trying to figure out why it's called a "murder ballad," but that describes her sense of humor and her song style (she killed the audience!).
Most importantly, it got my date to agree to see NICK HARPER at the ABBEY PUB in Chicago in four weeks (right SCOTPAULABEAR?). Now, if I can convince some more of my musical friends with free tickets (free for them, not me)...

Watched the vid, which visually enhances the idea the song is a murder ballad, but didn't hear or see any reference to a "Nick."
Since i don't know where you got the idea my name is Nick, I have to disabuse (I hate this word!) you of that notion. Perhaps it means I'm going to see a Nick Harper show, or is it Shawn's ex-husband's name, or Sunny's victim?

I don't remember signing off as "Nick." Must have been a joke referencing something in the post, or just a very tired non-Freudian slip of the digits.
Surely my American use of "z" (as in realize) and my pronunciation:confused1: of words like "herb" (pronounced "urb") should give me away if I weren't so consistently "yankee-centric." (Hey, I like that term! Not to be confused with "yankee-eccentric.")

Yea just got back from a gig in a 15th century Pink lime washed Abbot's House here in Dunfermline Toon.
Steve Tilston was playing he played two sets and did a fine job. I think he played a couple of new songs or at least I didn't recognise some of them but that may just be down to my ignorance.
A particularly lovely moment was Anthony Believes which is a beautiful song. Other stand out songs were Road When I Was Young the topical but he wrote just before the Credit Crunch kicked in Pretty Penny
and his version of Face The Music and Dance which he played as part of his Farther of the Bride speech at his daughter's wedding :)
Apparently there is a tribute gig later in the year for Davey Graham which Steve will be playing and Steve has written an instrumental that has strong hints of Davey's Anji. Steve explained that Davey's Anji has a descending bass line whereas his tune has an ascending bass line, so it's a sort of backwards anji so he's not sure if he's going to call it Ijna or just simply Davey G
If you get a chance to see Steve on his current tour do go.

Last Saturday I was at Gabe's backstage lounge in Highwood, Illinois to see varied forms of old and new bands at a pre- book-signing for "The Chicago Music Scene -- 1960s and 1970s." The author -- Dean Milano -- four other musicians in the book (Joan and Gary Gand who've owned my local music store for 30+ years, Jim Sohns, Jimy Rogers) and a handful of others, were performing mostly Chicago Blues for a few hours.
What was amazing to me was how easy it turned out to be to proselytize Roy and Nick Harper. It turns out the "Official" book release and signing is at the ABBEY PUB a day after NICK HARPER and Cy Curnin appear there. There will be musicians from about twenty of the bands mentioned in the book, each playing at least a number or two during the daytime. Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Soul, Pop, you name it... and BLUES!
Last Saturday, at the tiny venue in Highwood, two of the musicians knew who Roy was and one was curious how he's doing. Another said he'd be at the Nick/Cy show, but he may have mis-heard me and may have meant the book signing the next day (that was Jimy Rogers, singer from The Mauds).
Small world! Keep on going Nick and Roy!

Not only was the gig fantastic, but she met my little girl Grace (aged 5) back stage before the gig.

Not seen or heard of any of those, Fish...you must have your finger on the pulse.
Not really got into gig going this year at all, strangely. A friend of mine was recently canvassing for views for an article on what people hate most about other people at gigs. Guess what seemed to be uppermost for many? Yep, the old talking problem, followed by being shoved about and having beer slopped on you. No wonder am a bit off of them!

Talking is deffo a problem at more acoustic gigs, but the rock gigs, if you can hear talking the PA isnt loud enough ! :)

Recently:
Duke Special, Robyn Hitchcock (Fish, you forgot to list that!)
Coming up:
DOGS Manchester Moho, this Sunday 16th May
Peter Hammill, Salford Lowry, Sunday 23rd May
A good year for gigs so far. Unfortunately Luka Bloom has cancelled his UK dates due to tendonitis, but his Bury gig would have clashed with DOGS anyhow.

Saw a band tonight who near moved me to tears and have captured my heart. And I don't think that was due to feeling like death warmed up with a streaming cold, or for that matter their vocalist still suffering throat problems.
Stornoway. No, not Scots but from posh Oxford. And they are just something. If you're around at Glasto or B Days they are doing both, as well as loads of other festies. Do not miss! And if in London, they are doing instores next Mon + Tue at HMV Oxford St and Rough Trade. Oh, and the new album Beachcomber's Windowsill is pretty darn lush. Check out Zorbing.

Sean at Drowned In Sound giving it 9/10 and he has just told me he never gives anyone more than 6 ever! Amazingly talented Conor O'Brien just kept right on wringing everyone's heartstrings to the end. I was at the RAH last night seeing Mark Knopfler ... I was sitting up just behind the mixing desk ... and the folk on the front row must have been really cheesed of with the free-loading photographers who were running left and right trying to get that perfect shot. They are lucky that I wasn't on the front row ... because I would have definitely said ( at least ) something to them !!

It was a good night .. obviously not as good as Dire Straits in the 80's ... but he's still a brilliant guitarist ... though the gig did remind me of seeing Clapton at the RAH many years ago ... when I was in a box and the people sharing the box couldn't give a hoot about his music ... until he played Layla and then all was forgiven !!
At the Knopfler gig a lot of people sat around me, just didn't like his new stuff ... and probably didn't give it a chance ... which is a big shame !! His new stuff is much more folkie ... and not surprising since two of his band members were John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick ( someone I'd wanted to see in years ! ) ... overall I thought it was an excellent night ... and of course when he did play some Dire Straits stuff ... that was amazing !!

Glastonbury rawked!
Bloody hot and very tiring trying to run from one area to another to catch someone you wanted to see (missed Stornoway entirely ) who clashed with someone else you wanted to see.
Villagers were sublime (as always). London folk be sure to catch them in August when they play TUNNELS (not only Nick does 'em, then!), the ones at the Old Vic (am I the only person who didn't know they even had any tunnels???). Frankie and the Heartstrings, cool and funny. Area was rammed for Delphic's blinding set. Editors, just hypnotic to watch Tom (and not just because he is, erm, strangely attractive ). Pet Shop Boys proved yet again that journos can make it in the music biz (am still humming Being Boring to myself) and it can be cool to wear foliage on top of your head. Big atmosphere in the Football Field for the England game, which I missed start of as Temper Trap were on (the cobbers were tight), and then left again, as did a lot of other people, after the third German goal.....
Lots of good and amazing things about the weekend. We were meant to be leaving Saturday night as didn't want to camp, to go back to hotel and return to site Sunday lunchtime. Didn't quite work out as PSB were late and then there was so much happening at different spots. Ended up in someone's VIP tent (which had loos!) for part of the night and watching Craig Charles's funky stuff till past 3am when they got pulled, ha! No sleep and the heat and stuff Sunday....God, did I feel bad!....and then we left early yesterday evening to get to the hotel we didn't make night before. Thought I'd be exhausted, but awake until 4am today and then the journey back to London.
And after all that...I still do not like festivals.

The glorious Crosby Stills & Nash at the SECC in Glasgow. Horrible venue (and Crosby said they'd really love to play something more intimate next time - yes please!), but stunning gig. Plus by some fluke we bagged front row seats! :m3: Of the 4 gigs I've seen, everyone has IMHO gotten even better. Stills especially was on fire and looked fantastic... they're probably the only big-ticket band I'd see without question, they're really value for money.
And I don't normally advocate this sort of thing but my guy let me stick my head into this pic of Stills during "Love the One You're With" - enjoy my nose hairs :D

I saw Jeff Beck in Bonn on Monday. Quite a strange gig really. Overall I enjoyed it as a night out out but it was an odd set of tunes that was played. Amongst the flamboyant guitarring on the up-tempo stuff (Rollin and Tumblin, Higher amongst others that I didn't know or can't remember) he did several slower covers. Beatles' Day in a life was quite interesting but there was also Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Nessun Dorma and Corpus Christi Carol - all of which sounded a bit "Hank Marvin" to me. There were one or two other ghastly touches such as a voice synthesizer, which, mercifully was only used briefly by the keyboard player on a couple of songs.
Joe Bonamassa was the support but I only caught the last 15 minutes or so of that set so didn't really get into it much.

the tunnels are quite a way from the Old Vic BTW. At least 4 or 5 pubs.
Not your average gig this one though, Alan Moore isn't your average popster.
The venue could be described as dank. Or atmospheric. The tunnels have been open for about a year and have a hard-line minimalist decor. There's a bar and old cinema seating - I'd guess the capacity between 150 & 200.
The lad Moore was in his finest Wizard togs and sat a table reading from Unearthing with backing from Crook & Flail (guitar, piano, noises) - think Electronic #1 by Hawkwind and you're in the right area.
The reading spanned 3 45 minute sets and was very enjoyable, he has a distictive accent and delivery. The content covers the life of one his mates - Steve Moore - and their majickal adventures. Not sure if he's doing many more events like this but if he does, I'd recommend you catch him.
Venue directions:The Old Vic Tunnels, Station Approach Road, SE1(next to WaterlooStation.) Exit the tube (all lines) into Waterloo mainline rail station. Near platform1 is an exit onto Station Approach Road, take this and turn right, walk allthe way down Station Approach Rd (100yds), venue entrance is on right justbefore the road goes under a bridge.

I saw The Pretty Things last night. They were phenomenal from the opening bar (or was that the opening of the bar?). The rhythm section looked like they had a combined age of 12 but May and Taylor were no less sprightly. I haven't looked to see if they are out and about elsewhere at the moment but if they are - I would recommend them very highly.

Still stunned by Stornoway at Shepherds Bush last night. Saw them at Brookes in Oxford the other week and didn't think that could be topped, but this headliner 2000 sell out was pure joy and magic. Certainly one of my top 5 gigs of the year.
The roof nearly came off after they did the first of two totally unplugged songs - in a venue that size and with complete and utter silence from the crowd too. 'Thanks for listening', lovely Brian said afterwards, in that sincere and unassuming way of his.
Of course, everyone wanted Zorbing, and it came as the last song: with a balloon drifting around the galleries and a cascade of russet and green artificial autumnal leaves falling down from the roof to end. The full standing ovation they received more than justified.
Everything worked. Lighting and effects; sound top quality.
And how often do you see a backline of 7 guitars, banjo, drums, cello, double bass, violin, trumpet, piano, organ, computer aids all for one band!

A lovely intimate evening on Friday with Boo Hewerdine at Leigh Folk Club, a mere 3 miles from my house.
The resident group who opened where a bit too "sing along in an old lady's voice if you know the chorus" and the interval trio were a bit histrionic, and the folk club is not my ideal environment, I'm not quite ready for that (yet...), but Boo was very good indeed, a consummate songwriter and accomplished guitarist, but modest enough to invite a fan onstage to sing "footsteps fall" with him. And he made a great job of it too.
Boo was also concerned that the folk club may have to shut as the present organisers were retiring, but was very pleased when he learned that a rather attractive lady was going to take it over.
This was the first time I've seen Boo since about 1990, when he supported Richard Thompson at Manchester Free Trade Hall.

On Thursday, I will be sat on the very same seat ( front row centre ) watching another Barnsley act - Kate Rusby ... which I know will be a totally different experience ... although both acts have collaborated a lot in the past, even to the extent that some of the Grimethorpe guys played at Kate's wedding !!

Last night, Last FM Festival ('festival' bit of a misnomer, but at least there was no mud) at the Forum.
Bones (no idea who or what they were or are as missed), Chapel Club, The Young Knives (didn't know they were still going; haven't seen for 3 or 4 years. Terra Firma is an ace song though) and The Futureheads (much tipped, quite liked but didn't quite reach my heart).
Chapel Club - love em to pieces. This surely has to be their year. New album has 4* rating in Q and early reviews all good. They opened with, what is for me, the highlight on Palace - Fine Light. Such a song.

Went down to St Pancras Old Church last Friday (as mentioned in the Best Venue thread), primarily to catch Porcelain Raft.
Porcelain Raft which is really a one man - Mauro Remiddi - mixes keys, guitar (playing with it on his lap at times), loops and samples, in a dreamy, lush way. I had fallen in love with this http://t.co/sR565y1 (which he put together himself) when I saw it. He is gorgeous too - think David Beckham with an Italian accent! :blushing: Very clever guy and totally love his stuff.
But also on the bill were Lonely Galaxy - who I think a lot of people here would like - and Oupa (in fact, it was an acoustic lush-fest of a night!).
Oupa, which is Dan Blumberg, vox of Yuck's, side project, was a revelation. This song he performed on a Roland, and if you can imagine his vocals (which remind me of a howling cat's  but it works somehow) soaring out in the quiet and perfect acoustics of the church, well I can honestly say I had a lump in my throat during http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jfZZfavNew
Oh, and one other thing. Not once during either of the three artists' sets did one person talk! Whether that was due to the calibre of the performers or the church setting or a combination of both, I don't know. But it was such a treat.

Scott Matthews last night at The Stables in Milton Keynes ... in their smaller room ( I didn't even know they had two stages ) with about 120 folk. Scott's singing & guitar playing is so mesmerizing ( even though it's sometimes hard to understand his accent ) and he was playing mostly accoustic last night. Brilliant gig ... with a lot of wierd waffle between songs ... a lot about his spring onions that he is growing at home ... rock 'n' roll !!
He also had his new CD ( What the Night Delivers... ) on sale ... though as last night was the last night of his mini-tour; it won't be available again until it's official release on 5th Sept and the following BIG tour ... and even only after a couple of plays ... I think it'll be easily in my top 5 CD's of 2011 when the stormock poll starts at Christmas !!
If anyone likes John Martyn AND Jeff Buckley - then I'd suggest giving Scott a listen !!

Roger Waters performing 'The Wall' in Birmingham last monday.
Difficult to express how good it was, just immense.

King Creosote and Friends (the 'friends' being fellow Fence Collective (http://www.fencerecords.com/) band Kid Canaveral) at the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh... I've only ever seen King Creosote as an opener (for Squeeze and KT Tunstall) in the past, I really loved him in the smaller sweatier setting and appreciated the gorgeous songs a lot more. And if Kid Canaveral are half as good as their playing and the couple of songs I heard, I can't wait to hear them again
I also saw the Secret Sisters (http://www.secretsistersband.com/) in Edinburgh this week - they're a pair of guitar-playing sisters (no! :D ) from Tennessee who were (I think) discovered by T-Bone Burnett who produced their album. Amazing harmonies and fantastic banter (and a look that could be inspired by Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line)... they're equally influenced by Brandi Carlile and Hank Williams and they're eclectic in the nicest way possible

Aww, jealous! I CANNOT stop listening to "A Creature I Don't Know". IMHO, if another musician this year can have 3 album songs in a row more stunning than "I Was Just a Card", "Don't Ask Me Why" and "Salinas", I'll be shocked

Aarrgh, just too many gigs going on - my spirit is far more willing than the rest of me!
Great in last weeks have been Clock Opera - Guy on the old tin kettle is a fun section - who truly were a delight each and every time seen in last 2 months. Same goes for Other Lives - vast array of instruments and a spacious panoramic sound. Zulu Winter, less than half a dozen gigs done, yet already have ladies throwing their bras on stage at them! Seen twice and totally in love with - not least that their lovely vox Will got me in the back door at last night's show after the venue was so rammed that even the guestlisters were being turned away.
And, of course, Chapel Club *sigh* Too unwell to make the whole tour, but got in the last 3 nights. New synthy sound and one or two real growers in the new material. Such a joy to see them headline to 1500 at Shepherds Bush Empire. And the sweetest, most lovely thing that Lewis did that I felt very humbled and touched by was to dedicate a song to me for the support and stuff I had shown them. Trouble was, while he was in the middle of this pre-planned little speech, I was ... TALKING!! ... so missed the whole thing! Bit embarrassing as he caught me too, ha! I hadto get him to repeat the whole thing later to me at the post-show do. And, I got a blog review mention (a change to be in a review, instead of writing them!) too, en français, though.

Ian Anderson plus wonderful band and Greg Lake at Salisbury Cathedral, Saturday last.
Utter magical, still feeling warm and fuzzy and smiling intermittently.
Genius.
