What a show, ZPZ lived up to all expectations, I was blown away by some of the solo's especially Inca Roads, Cosmik Debris, Zomby Woof and Willie The Pimp, and what a bunch of really down to earth musicians, just like Roy and Nick. They were out at the end on stage talking to everyone and it was great to shake hands with Dweezil and Joe Travers the FZ Vaultmeister, (and an amazing drummer too!) I've been a big fan of both since the 'Z' years.
The evening ended with around 20 people Zapped out and dancing on stage and the whole crowd on their feet,
Certainly the most fun I've had with my clothes on for good while..

Just an added post, I love Son Of Orange County, this is a bit special as Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio join ZPZ with Napoleon Murphy Brock on vocals, he sung the original on the Roxy & Elsewhere album, 1974. One for music fans alike everywhere, especially the guitar players on here, and a great tone from his SG and usual quality solo!
Cheers Shaun..

That's them, yeah.:D
Maybe cos I had mentioned their guy here, I had a weird dream about him last night. We were at some venue (not sure if Brum - he also PRs for a couple of venues there - didn't recognise it) and I was wanting him to get me backstage - to see Nick Harper! But he kept talking to people, and I was getting edgy because I wanted to get in. Weird.

Sorry, the last thing I saw on Sunday was the wonderful Steve Knightley... we decided Sunday night at home in a real bed was required and the Sunday lineup wasn't too hot. We did get quite lucky with the weather though... the prolonged rain forecast for Saturday night and all of Sunday didn't materialise!

Did you get chance to see Kangaroo Moon
No, they were later on Sunday as well I think. But I have seen them before, in the days when I used to go to Glastonbury.
The person I did see was Luka Bloom, who played a great set and showed an unexpected line in warm, self-deprecating humour. I bought his "Tribe" album, hoping to listen to it today.

Went to see Mott The Hoople at Hammersmith last night. What a revelation; not by any stretch a bunch of has beens trotting out some loveable nostalgia but a simply breathtaking performance almost on a par with their early 70s heyday.
Having seen them in the same venue 36 years previously and them having been apart for almost as long, it was utterly spine-tingling and I instantly remembered what being 15 felt like.

I would have liked to add a quick note here saying how good the gig was ... but something very strange happened tonight !! I didn't bother getting there for the support act, so I entered the club just before 9:00pm. The club is a little bit cliquey but friendly enough. Stephen was great, just how I remembered him ... he played for 45 minutes and then had a break, so I bought his 2 CDs and went outside for a breather. I re-entered the club about 30 seconds after Stephen did ( he was outside having a smoke ) but I found the doors to the venue locked !!!?! I knocked a couple of times, but no one answered ... so I went home !!
I have sent the venue a rather "colourful" email !!

Last gig I went to.... The Swell Season, last night at Salford Lowry. Gorgeous gig, although Glen commented on the weird ambience in the room. Audience was very quiet, but that was because we were all listening, rapt, to the beautiful music. He did conclude that the room (Quays Theatre) was designed in a way that didn't allow audience noise to carry very far. The music sounded great though. A quiet gig is not necessarily a bad thing, and we joined in with some singalongs at the end.
He also said that they don't play much in the UK because "it's a weird place for Irish bands to play, the media has a very X Factor mentality" which elicited protest from the audience, but he has got a point, saying that the Frames (his other band, who form the backing for Swell Season) could sell out venues in Ireland then play to 12 people in Liverpool. He promised to return for a bigger tour sometime soon.
Support were The Lost Brothers, a king of Irish Proclaimers duo singing country-tinged songs, great harmonies.

[Rant Begin:  ]
I still need to be assured that BD have improved their act ( the organisers not the bands ) since when we went ... in that year it was the most un-organised festival we had ever been to ( queing up to get into the site - the last mile took us what about 3 hours or so - as they were putting the wrist bands on to people as they were sat in their cars - very slow AND very non Green !! ) since then has been surpassed by the now defunct Eastern Haze festival ... but as the BD is supposed to be the Levellers festival ( who have obviously attended 100's of festivals themselves ) we would have thought that they would have known what they were doing !!
[Rant End: ]
Erm so ... no, probably won't be doing BD this year !!

HAHA okay fair enough :p
I have heard it's better from repeat attendees, but they may be biased... everyone said the year before last was meh but this year was amazing, best vibe ever. And I haven't heard the traffic complaints again... that was MURDER, if we'd missed Nick sitting in traffic - which we nearly did - I would have lost my mind. :willy_nilly:
Regardless, I am going this year (family health issues willing) - the tickets are bought and I'm psyched no matter who is playing. Though Nick had better haha.

What did you make of that? I wasnt a bit impressed with Todd Rundgren's Johnson. I wasnt one of those booing but it was pretty rubbish. Wizard was great though. I think i might have preferred it if he played it as more of a straight band thing with less of the pantomime and not had the band members doing lead vocals because he had to run off and change costume again but thats a fairly minor gripe when it was all so silly and entertaining. Highlights for me were Zen Archer, Is It My Name (or whatever its called) and a few others too probably. The band were excellent, i was suprised how close to the original it sounded. tonight, it's Todd Rundgren @ Hammersmith Odeon (or whatever it's called these days). Hey, lucky you! People will start to think there is something going on between you and Mike! :D
I would say, trust the Academies to mess up, apropos Bellowhead but was it organised by them, or was it a comp thing run by the artist? If the latter, then the door staff can only go by what names they have on the list. It is always handy to take some proof with you and/or a contact number for someone on the night, just in case of problems.
I have only ever had trouble three times - all with the same band! One of which was an Academy Birmingham show. The girl on the door was really nice, however, and after I stood for ten minutes trying to get a mobile signal in order to call up all the email correspondence that I had had with the band's manager about other things, and try to find the mention of that gig. When I finally did and showed it to her, she looked at it and said she'd accept it as that was how she knew this guy signed off his mails (ie I hadn't faked the mail!). And as SteveT here knows, the other time at Portsmouth, I got the 'if your name's not down you're not coming in' mob on the door, and ended up having to phone a band member's girlfriend several hundred miles away to phone the TM inside to let me in. All fun and games.
I am feeling end of year gig fatigue now. Would have liked to see John Smith tonight, but may leave that and just head straight for Pretty Green and Exit Calm Friday.

Finally, after about 8 years of waiting, Alexi Murdoch is coming to London.
Playing the Borderline tonight and I am very excited!
What with Nick at the Cellars on Friday, this could be quite a week.

Next up on my agenda: the amazing Record Store Day line up at Rough Trade with Jamie Woon, Wild Beasts and Chilly Gonzales; then The Dears; then to Paris for Chapel Club and then back to London for two nights later - more Chapel Club!

And I didn't do the first things above in the end! But went to see Metronomy and Ghostpoet instead, ha! Metronomy have little personal light gadgets on their chests - which may have been the highlight of my night.
But I am on track for the rest of my list.
Plus, if anyone wants to blow Easter Sunday and be my +1 at the Barfly, Camden for Chapel Club, Tripwires, Flashguns - hit me up, as the kids say.

Tonight I am going to see NatW at Roundhouse.
Wasn't as impressed with album 3 as I was #2 (the homage to Marling).

I saw Noah and his whale at KOKO the other month, Pete - wasn't that enamoured, have to say, but have had some good reviews
Saw Anna Calvi and Grouplove in Cambridge on Saturday. Not that taken with the former (despite the curernt hype about her) but loved Grouplove :)
This week is, bar tomorrow night at Hoxton for The Lines, for me all Chapel Club (sorry, ha! that's the way it rolls with me): Wednesday at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston, and then 3 nights at Brixton opening for Suede. :m3:

Not strictly my next gig - should be a pit stop this week for Exit Calm and The Twang, but all very up in the air given my current health woes and 2 hospital visits this weekend! - but at 3am next Sunday *should* be preparing to leave in the morning for Manc and the start of the 8 date Chapel Club tour! Yeehah!
So been looking forward to, and with support from the mega good Clock Opera and Other Lives (at SBE), plus 2 sets per show from Chapel...should be an amazing tour. So if you're by Manc - Edinburgh - Sunderland - York - Portsmouth - Brighton - Oxford - London come and stop by! ;-)
Here's a little taster. Track, new, but won't be on next album http://t.co/g91iOibV and you can free download here, if you like! http://t.co/ptMWMfd5

On Saturday night (10th Dec), it's Hawkwind @ Shepherds Bush Empire.
That gig is bookended by top Hawkwind tribute/covers combo Hoaxwind in Irish pub tribute/covers bar O'Neils (they'll be on at 7:45 & 10:45) - and absolutely free.

The Unthanks tomorrow night. I saw them earlier in the year doing their own stuff but they are doing the songs of Robert Wyatt and Anthony & The Johnsons (sp?) on this tour. I haven't bought the album yet so I'm looking forward to a set, most of which will be unfamiliar to me.

Not strictly a 'next gig', but anyone planning to go to Honeyfest and check out Dry The River, you can also catch them in London on the 23rd of this month at XOYO at the Q Sessions......just *luckily* the very wonderful Clock Opera open for them too!!!
And hear the Clocks here. I know some of you have done already  This is the new brill vid for the single release at end of month of Once And For All.

Lucky!
I'm doing an interesting 'gig' this weekend - a friend is having a modern 'salon' and inviting creative friends (writers, musicians, artists etc) to come over and share their arts with each other. I shall be sitting there appreciating, drinking and hiding my lack of talent :blushing:
Next 'proper' gig out after that is 2:54 in Glasgow first week of April. They're kinda like the new Lush. To me, this is a good thing...
And I've just realized half the 14 gigs I've seen so far this year have involved Nick. No comment. :blushing:

I saw the Fall in Edinburgh about 4 years ago - caught them on an off night, wasn't really that into it (neither was MES I suspect!), but at least they finished the gig, unlike a more recent Edinburgh fiasco
