Nick first gig

I appear to have been at Nicks first real solo gig, judging from what he said on the podcast I did, at Zarathustra's.

The above was posted by Paul in another thread, but which brings up this question again of when exactly was Nick's first gig proper?

I was under the impression - if we're looking at first time he went out on a stage under his own name and did his own set - it was at the Brighton Heineken Festival in June 1993. Yet 2 years or so ago, I had this same debate with Pete Doherty's manager (how would he know, you may ask? Well, he would actually as he's a friend of Nick's and someone I know.:biggrin:), because he said he promoted Nick's first gig - and that I think was a place in Battersea...? Whether that might be this Zarathustra's, I can't recall. When was this Zara's gig? I know the one Andy referred to was either late 93 or early 94 - which would still make Brighton first in that case.

But does anyone know any more on when and where the FIRST was?:w00t:

I was under the impression that Brighton came first too (1993), unless that doesn't count in some way as a 'gig' in the way that some refer to it. Anyhow, it was an interesting performance from both Roy and Nick.

Interesting. Well, I booked Nick and Roy for the Heineken Big Top in Brighton in 1993, the deal being that I'd manage the second stage if they agreed to have the Harpers on the bill. I remember standing in the crowd with Roy (having introduced Nick on stage) and watching his set. I vaguely recall that Nick had performed a solo gig before that time, but as to when and where...

Well I can only go on what Nick said himself, that the Zarathustra gig was the first real one (it was a folk club somewhere around Clapham Junction I think). Sadly I looked in my harper email archive but it only goes back as far as 1996 or so. I don't know what's happened to the really early archives of the mailing list. I am a bit worried I have lost them in the various job moves and so on. I wanted to dig back and see as I would probably have written something up for the list about the first gig. Anyone got stuff going back that far back?

Dave - I didn't know you were involved with the Brighton one. We probably met then - and then left it another 14 years before our paths crossed again at Komedia! See you again on 24th.

The Clapham gig you mentioned, pd, must be Andy's one.
