St. Helens. Well that's pretty damned local for me so I reckon I'll go.

I missed Nick when he recently came to a record store in St.H promoting Miracles.

St. Helens was the first place I ever saw Roy, at the Tech College, probably in 1984. I've since spoken to the guy who organised it, I think it was via this forum. He was a student back then and in charge of entertainmment & events.

Craig, I was there.

If I recall correctly it was organised by John Miller (dunno where he is now) and our own Dave W.
I done the poster.

I expect it was a very good concert.

Was it one of those 'Nick Harper: Dish of the Day' posters?!!!!!

Craig_Powers
24-01-2008, 04:15 PM
I recall there was one student gal in some sort of spiderman face makeup (a spiders web sorta thing), and she sat on the stage all the way through the gig giving Roy a hard time with heckles. Roy gave back as good as he got, and it added to the atmosphere.

Harper gigs always are interactive!

That'd be michael critchton you'd be after! I wouldn't mind his money though. Doesn't seen to be a lot of readys in this newspaper lark - they've not offered me a dime.

I think it's an all seated gig this one. It was selling quite well apparently - lets get it to sell out. Indeed i need to go flyering along studentville. There's also the student radio that no one listens to.

Pete! Do you think it's worth getting in touch with wish fm? They completely ignored me about the instore gig.

I wonder if the same surname made him look closer at the e-mail rather than just skipping it!

Critch:

Do you want to meet in town somewhere early next week so I can give you some posters for the distribution of?

Citadel is all seated, yes. I'm planning on Manchester & Liverpool so will be giving this one a miss, funds won't stretch. last time Nick played there it was sold out & we were refused entry, not that I hold a grudge or anything.... I prefer standing gigs.

I know Suzanne at Wish FM, she's a bit of an airhead but I've done some sterling design work for her recently, she owes me a favour. Can you forward whatever press release/statement you have prepared (!) and I'll send it on to her, you never know, it might get a mention.

Got a few virgins to sacrifice - but i think everyone is working the next day so it might be just me after the gig. Shame but such is the day. At present, it's me, fozzwick, fozzwick's parents and house mate, and possibly a lass from sailing and her hubby. I think when we're a touch nearer, tickets permitting, there my be a couple more deciding to go. This one HAS to sell out. Surely, for the love of god we can get the people of st h to show they have musical taste. Afterall, we're the proud home town of the girl singer from beautiful south! Lol.

critch
28-01-2008, 11:42 AM
There are a few curry houses. There's one on westfield st i think which i'm told is good. There're a couple on north road. I tend to do take out which is why i don't know...

Anyone know the latest on ticket sales? I rang on friday and they told me roughly what had gone. I'd do it again, but i've lost the number!

I think the article appears thursday so that *should* sell a few more. Does anyone know what sort of affect these things have?

critch
29-01-2008, 02:00 PM
Answer from other thread! Me wuz accused of wibbling?!

I rang them up before. I keep gettin mixed messages. Friday they said 110 had gone from 200, today they tell me there are 80 left from 161. I suspect there are probably 80 left from 200. My hunch is that 161 is the capacity for seated, and 200 with standing downstairs. There may be some debate going on now as to whether to have it standing or not - I suppose it has sold well and if it's a sell out, they might as well make it standing to get a few more in.

In my experience of citadel booking politics they tend to work on the "do we need to open the upstairs" theory of Ticket sales.

If early tickets sales go well then they will push for the whole place to be open, if not then they only sell enough for the downstairs to be open.

I've had to argue the toss with them a few times over "we'll sell the rest on the door on the night" before now in order to get them to release the extra tickets.

Its was about 3/4 full last time I saw nick and the citadel, are we expecting a similar amount this time?

:hat:I have a massive travelling prob and the highway blues as rail works on all the days I would travel north. Bloody bother! Who's got a car and going up from south?

Yeah woman! Know what you mean! Aldershot's not the easiest place to get to and from late at night on public tranysport... but determined to get there... if he can make it to Everest then I'm sure I can manage it. Any nice warm park benches there for the night?... not for stalking I hasten to add!

Is he being recorded in the Williamson Tunnel of Love? Might be an unusual acoustic effect? My friend used to get the best sound by sticking his amp facing a large old Victorian fireplace. Don't forget your miner's lamps with the hard hats! Don't forget also to enquirewhen he's going to organise the deepest gig underwater or on Richard Branson's Virgin Galactica in space!

I have confirmation, the article is in the paper. Apparently it's about a third of a page with photo. That's about the same as that lister bloke last week. However, i've not seen it yet myself. I shall scan it in tomorrow if anyone wants to see it.

74 seats remaining here. A few have gone today as well as during the week after 'the lad' dropped the publicity stuff off!

Hopefully they'll start selling tomorrow and saturday. I imagine that there might be a few notice the article and go. The flyers probably helped - and are still helping, and people might just prefer to buy in person so be waiting til saturday when they're off work to do it.

Hope so anyway! I know of a few people thinking of going who haven't got tickets yet.

I think, baring the people causing major disruption (and let's hope their barred!) a great night was had by all. Certainly me anyway - but I'm biased.

Nick seemed on form - including upon request a fantastic rendition of Karmageddon, which brought back memories of when I first heard him. Fantabulous.

One of the few gigs where the services of the security staff were called upon to eject 3 members of the audience! Repeated heckling for Titties & Beer went beyond the (alcohol fuelled) banter it started with.

Setlist:

Three Magpies
By My Rocket
Good Bus
Guitar Man/ Whole Lotta Love
Treasure Island (string break)
Evo
Field Of The Cloth Of Gold
Real Life
Simple
Karmageddon
Aeroplane
Imaginary Friend
The Galaxy Song
Love Is Music / Out Of Time / Headless / Grace / Four Sticks (an extended version AND included a string break in addition!)
Blue Sky Thinking

I said to our kid last night.........

Nicks ready to tell St Helens about his life changing stories, but St Helens isn't entirely ready for him.

Its always enojoyable watching Nick even with all the distractions, but the best quote of the night had to be :

Nick : aw they've kicked them out, I was just getting to communicate with them
Famale audience member : We did communicate with them, we told them to F*** off.

pete c
11-02-2008, 09:37 AM
I thought the guy who shouted out "Thomas!" :confused1: and the woman shouting out completely unintelligible stuff in a voice like Zelda from Terrahawks, were funnier.

Craig_Powers
11-02-2008, 09:51 AM
The heckling incident was odd.

They clearly knew something of Nick's music because they were shouting for Titties & Beer. They paid good money to see Nick but just chose to shout him down instead of listening. It prevented him from introducing the songs via his Everest experiences, and moving through the set-list.

It wasn't as though they had taken a £10 punt on tickets, hated the show and decided to heckle.

Now how can I put this tactfully without causing offence? .... As you get closer to Liverpool the audiences tend to be a bit more 'interactive'. Its the first rule of nature that the first heckler will be a scouser, and that's OK because it's good natured and adds to the interactivity that we expect at a Harper gig (whether Nick or Roy).

But last night was way beyond that. I suspect they had been on a football-induced all day bender.

The bouncer who ejected them got a huge applause nearly as much as Nick got. And plenty wanted to shake his hand.

Anyway, a good night. A few different songs compared to Manchester of last week. No issues with the Apple Mac....all seemed to go OK.

And good to meet up with PeteC, Sadfist, Critch & Linn, plus that Nick geezer.

Now how can I put this tactfully without causing offence? ....

Alexei Sayle once said, "There is a street in St Helens, where the scouse accent dissapears and the Lancashire accent begins, it's literally somewhere in one street,we're loud and gobby and they are calm and reserved".

When you do something, anything in St Helens, you will always get some gobby get shouting you down usually in a tracky and with a scally accent, it's what makes St Helens such a tough place to grow up and live, and thats why I moved to Southport :)

But at the same time the vast majority of the audience where listening intently to the stories Nick was saying, it's just that the scallies probably don't know where Nepal is never mind care about people struggling to survive there, I mean, have you been to Parr?

I was positively embarrassed by the idiots in my home town last night. I'm usually the first to admit that it's not the best place in the world, but that was uncalled for and unexpected.

But for all that, nick did a fine job.

Critch, don't be embarrassed for them, just ignore them, I don't mind the heckling to be honest, and Nick spawns it often, he seems to enjoy the interaction more than some of the audience do, he takes people like that on as a challenge.

I'm certain he likes coming up to the St Helens and Liverpool areas cos it's always a crazy gig, matches his style I guess in some ways. I've not been to a Harper gig that hasn't had any heckling involved tbh.

As Craig picked up on this though, why pay good money only to make and arse of yourself? I can only assume they get in for concessionary.

In saying this though, usually the lack of an encore usually means that an artist has had enough ;) (although he doesn't always do them anyhow)

Craig_Powers

Nick handled it really well. He didn't appear to get too rattled, but must have been frustrated.

I was up in the balcony so didn't realise it was just an isolated 2 or 3 who were doing the shouting. However those 2 or 3 seemed to encourage more heckling. Once they went it settled down.

I was most impressed with the heckler when if he asked whether anyone would like to join him in leaving in protest because Nick wouldn't play his favourite tune. I was even more impressed with the reply that the rest of us gave him!!

They had front row seats and everything! Weirdos!

Nick seems to plough his entire soul into every gig. Saw him at the end of the night, and he looked, putting it politely, completely f****d!

It was absolutely smashing to meet all of yous. Craig - you're a star and "chauffeur to the stars"!

Highlight again, if it's possible to pick an individual song from them, was Real Life, again. He's really getting into the heart of that song. A couple of tours ago, it was Blood Song that he nailed each night, then I think last year it was Love Junky, and now Real Life. That said, the Channel M version of it last year was particularly haunting.

Who was the person who shouted out "Are you warmed up yet?"? Bit of a geeky joke but it did make me laugh - and I'm fairly sure Nick got it too. Wish I'd thought of shouting it!

Delighted at the inclusion of Karmageddon. That was how I remember Nick when I first saw him back in 2000 (?). Loads of energy and vigour. I love the pensive songs, but I do feel sometimes the best cure is always to hit it as hard and fast as possible!

Really enjoyed the Citadel gig last night, despite the 3 drunks in the front row. They were determined to be thrown out from the start and showed a total lack of respect for the man when he was telling the crowd about his experiences. That said, what a show he has a distinct style made all his own, brilliant haunting vocal range and guitar acrobatics I'm sure cannot be equalled. Also witnessed 2 string changes mid-song unbelievable.

I went with 3 mates who were mightily impressed, and we had a brief chat with him at the end shook his hand and got some cds signed, a very down to earth guy, this was my first Nick solo gig I've seen him play with his dad but this was a different ball game altogether, a high energy music fest is the best I can describe it.

It was also nice to meet Linn and Critch albeit very briefly, a brilliant gig and 3 new Nick Harper converts.:cheers2:
Favourite tracks of the evening Karmageddon and Simple..
