not a common mixture, you will have to admit - read on.............

A Whitehall high flyer chosen by Gordon Brown to oversee the security and intelligence agencies is a cycling fan with a passion for the Grateful Dead.
Alex Allen, 56, was yesterday made chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, responsible for assessing reports from MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.
Extolling his favourite band, he says: "I first saw the Dead in the mud at Bickershawe in 1972 and was so knocked out ... I have been a Deadhead ever since."

I feel strangely encouraged by this. One would like to think that, despite the temptations and trappings of power and the pervasive encouragement to conform in a society where self absorbed behaviour is positively encouraged, the more worldly-aware viewpoint that I find is often awakened in those that listen to music crafted with love and respect for others may still find a place in the heart of the person involved and may yet guide their hand when it matters most.

(this post brought to you by the society for very long sentences)
