Do you mean you are open to other forums linked to add to this forum or new subjects for this forum? If you are looking for a new subject for an interesting forum mine would be "Festival Serendipities" about crazy interesting things that have happened to Cockers at festivals - like when this guy stood up bollock naked in front of me with a big ginger beard and start berating us all in a loud angry voice against the world ; like the time I'd over-indulged back stage and promptly tripped over the microphone cables onstage and the guitar went one way out of tune and me t'other - the audience thought it was hilarious and done on purpose! Those were the days my friend!
aw
I meant forums themselves - other than the 4 already present (General, Off Topic, etc). Your Serendipities thread would be fine in one of the existing categories, but if people strongly wanted to discuss something that is definitely a category of its own (e.g. TV Programmes, Photography, etc) then it could have its own forum.
One mistake that I've seen on some sites though is to have too many forums, which only tends to confuse people...

You could add it yourself (if you have time!)... something like amusing Festival anecdotes or something..
cheers

Come on Mr Watterson, I set you up an "Anecdotes" forum and you haven't posted anything yet... :smash:

I mentioned my two festival serendiptious anecdotes and didna wanna to repeat myself... perhaps you can transfer them over to the Anecdotal forum? Otherwise I will resubmit.... if you think they are worthy or everyone's read them already probably?
aw
ps So going back to Zappy little nappies etc.... if I send you loads of blank emails then, will it count them and promote me to Administator then? Must be something to aspire to I suppose in this sad cruel world full of unrequited souls.. god I think I can even talk myself into auto-depression these days! It's Roy's fault of course all that 'burning the world' is enuf to make anyone lemming-like.

So why has everyone except Paul got a "zappy little nappy"?

What is the zappy little nappies thing all about? And when does one move out of nappies, pray?!
Post more and ye shall move on from nappies.

Hello all. So I'll make a suggestion right off. Just to make a slightly more welcoming scenario for the newcomer (such as today, me), how about opening a forum called "Introduce Yourself". New person then says whatever they feel they want about theirself, how they'd like to contibute to forums/what they would like to get from them etc etc. Existing members can post back. Just gives a jumping off point really and a structure to start icebreaking. Plus a few months/years down the line, there's an easy to locate place to go back to and refresh your memory about someone. I know at least one other forum with quite a big subscriber group where they do this and it works well.
Plus if you set one up, I'm certainly willing to take my shot.
Sounds like a good idea to me.

how about enabling that grayed out quick reply box at the bottom of each page?
It's enabled. You click on the icon on the message you want to "Quick Reply" to (bottom right, looks like a piece of paper and pencil - to the right of "Quote") and then the box is enabled. You can quick reply to any message in the thread you are viewing using this mechanism.

Any chance of extending the window of opportunity for amendments/deletions?
And to be able to do the above from a mobile without having to key in the whole message again? (That's what happens on mine anyway.)

I've changed the time period to change the title of a post to 2 hours, and the body of a post to 4 hours. In case people are interested, the reason this is done is to stop morons from posting stupid messages, seeing reactions, and then editing the original and pretending they hadn't done anything stupid :)
I can't really help with editing from a mobile without much more info about what phone you're using, what browser, what java engine it runs. I would however suggest that you try installing the mobile version of Opera on your phone if you don't have it already and see if that works better, assuming you are using a horrible brain dead windows based phone (if you aren't, I apologise!). The editing stuff is part of the vbulletin package and I have support for it so if this is a serious problem and I can gather enough info about it I can ask them to look into it.

Right, thanks, Paul.
I don't know if it's so much my phone as the system you are using here. On the old Harperspace board, one could edit/delete easily: the whole message would appear and one could make adjustments as necessary. Here, I don't get that. I have Opera and all that - the rest you are just confusing me with!
When Critch comes on and reads this, perhaps he can say how it is for him as I know he, like me, uses his mobile a lot here.

Do you know, I've never tried to edit a post from my mobile! I too use the opera browser - which I put on because the one with the phone couldn't post on the harpspace.co.uk forum.
I'll have a play around to see if I can figure something out - whatever you do though, don't switch to an iPhone! I've had no end of problems with O2 - they're currently trying to solve a problem I've had, and I resent the fact that they're claiming that the iPhone can do everything internetwise, when in reality, it seems that their network is struggling to support it. Grr!
[/rant] :D

Despite being an Apple enthusiast (1000 times better to use than anything Mr Gates has ever produced) I have managed to resist so far, despite really really wanting one. The tariff on O2 is too expensive and I want to wait until the 3G model comes out - which is rumoured for later this year.
I did play with one in an Apple store recently though and very nearly went for it...

Is "i" becoming the new "s" in scrabble? I believe soon we'll be able to prefix nearly every word with "i" as a cunning way of accumulating points quickly! A bit like the pluralising with an "s"!

Well try when you do next post. Just go in afterwards and try to edit and see what you get in the box. I get nothing.

I wondered whether there might be a call for a 'Message' section? ie where a message could be left for someone to view (and being open to others to comment, rather than using the personal messaging)? Often these may come up in a thread but the person one may want to view it may not read that thread.
Also, any chance of having that winky icon back on the main panel? Only I do find I want to often 'wink' when I'm using Opera, but it only lets me use the main ones. The ones in 'more' won't post for some reason...? Ta.
You can do a wink by entering a ";" then a ")" like this: ;)
I don't like the idea of the message section. I don't really think it adds any value over and above PMs or emails and I am trying not to clutter the place up with too many forums as I know that tends to dilute too much. I think that if you particularly want someone to read a thread you have written, you should send them a PM telling them so :)
Paul.

Okay. But why are there two of the same bored smilies on the main one? Or there were! One of those could be a winky!:)
I've done a bit of re-jigging of the smilies.

I love these smiley thingies! Sometimes I prefer them to the main course of the messages as an aperitif or hors d'oeuvres. Don't suppose you can find a cat type of one on your travels?

Paul, I know I've asked this before but forgotten answer and where it was! Sorry.
It was about being able to see at a glance what the last half dozen or so posts were. Someone, I think Chris, mentioned as an aside in a post awhile ago that he had missed something earlier as another thread in that forum had superceded it. When there's quite a lot of posting it is really easy to miss things. There used to be a list on the main page but that seemed to go in the reshuffle.
Hi Linn,
Try saving a bookmark to http://www.stormcock.net/vb/search.php?do=getnew - that should do the trick for you, I think!
Paul.

I tried that and it worked once. Then tried again and it came up with a no matches?

Well, if there are no unread messages, that's what you get.
If you want all messages posted in the last 24 hours you can use http://www.stormcock.net/vb/search.php?do=getdaily
All of this depends on you being logged in of course.
HarperPR
20-08-2008, 07:39 PM
Ohhh...maybe that's it then, I wasn't logged in. But why can't you view whether or not you are?
If you're not logged in, how is it meant to know who you are and thus what you have and haven't seen?
I've put an experimental "Recent Forum Posts" box on the front page, I'm just a bit worried about it using up too much space. Feedback appreciated. I've also put a forum at the top here that gets fed with front-page items from the main web site. I've done this because I think there are a lot of people that only look at the forums and so might miss "important" stuff (podcasts mainly at the moment but potentially tour news, release info etc).
Paul.

The forum posts are showing as blog posts here. Or is that just a try-out?
I assume you mean "Music News" items on the front page. Yes, that's an experiment also :)

But I'm easily impressed by anything Roy Harper!
(Have I already made that clear?)
Actually, I think I've equaled all my posts on other non-commercial sites combined. I'm still figuring this one out. I've been trying to Quote other posts to save confusion.
Thanks, PD, and keep up the good work!
