Not having been to the movie picturehouse for longer than I can remember (does the usherette still come round with the ices in the interval?), are there any good newies out? Has anyone seen Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky? Quite keen on that, and Deception with Ewan McGregor.

I saw Rise of the footsoldiers last night, an extremely violent film with bad language throughout but very true to life..it shows the build up to 3 gangland members getting murdered in Essex in a Range Rover, a brilliant British film and a true story!

No Country for Old Men

Wow! I loved this movie so I went to see it twice and that doesn't happen often. Perhaps it's already done the rounds in the UK, but it's still showing here in NZ.

I enjoyed No Country For Old Men, but what the hell was that ending about? Jesus. Everybody left the cinema shaking their heads.

It's notable for one of the most sinister "baddies" in cinema history. Well worth the oscar he got.

+A

Saw this the other night; extremely accurate & harrowing violence in the name of the beloved game. There is a 2004 DVD review and three for auction cheaply on Ebay at the moment.

Is it going to be The Reader and Slumdog scooping the board tonight then, do you reckon? Anyone seen either of them?

Did you see that Uncle Monty's derelict holiday home in the Lake District went for £265,000 last week? No planning permission granted for anything yet and estimated cost to get it habitable £150,000. But beautiful views and setting. The new owner hopes Withnail trekkies [fell walkers] and tourists will treat it as a shrine to aspire to and visit like Wordsworth's cottage.

i don't go to the pictures. i'd rather watch stuff in the comfort of my own home, even if it means waiting for the dvd to come out. it's my belief that people can't be trusted under cover of darkness...!

I would really like to see this one, actually anything with Ralph Fiennes is a must for me... did you see Brugges?

Been there...didn't see film! Although I've seen a fair number of Fiennes' films, I find him a bit like Hugh Grant in that there never appears much character variation. I saw him on stage in Hamlet at the Hackney Empire some years back...after which he started an affair with his 'mother' Francesca Annis who was cast in the role.

Seen Slumdog and loved the film. It is a treat to watch, long though so make sure you don't drink too much during!

the thing about feinnes that really makes my blood boil, is that he calls himself 'Raif'.

I always thought being a Hippie was a qualification of something?
Or being someone? And thinking about it...??? Objectively or otherwise.

TW@T!

He doesn't necessarily, it's just the way it's pronounced if one is not, well...of the lower order! The historic Fiennes family seat is Broughton Castle. Nice there.

ok... he pronounces it 'raif'... it's spelled ralph... he's a t**t!

Bob Jacobs

No: his parents were twats for calling him "Raif". He grew up with it, so I don't think you can blame him for that. Of course, he may be a twat anyway but not because of his name. As I don't know him, I can't make this judgement and I don't think that, rationally, you can either. If you want to brandish your prejudice against all "upper class" people with silly names, that, of course, is your privilege.

Well, personally I thoroughly enjoy watching Ralph Nathaniel Twisletone-Wykeham-Fiennes on the big screen :D

Schindlers List, Sunshine, The Constant Gardener, The End of the Affair etc... I wish there were more actors I found as captivating as he.

Last films seen: High School Musical 3 - not captivating at all but the grandchildren enjoyed it - and Confessions of a Shopaholic, a surprisingly enjoyable romp. Isla Fisher is very watchable :-)

Go see Ken Loach's Looking For Eric. You don't have to like football - or Eric Cantona, and is a lovely little film.

Sunday Express quote :

"Superstar Johnny Depp has played some oddball roles in his time including Willie Wonka, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, but there's one more role he would love to recreate : the manic student played by Richard E Grant in the cult masterpiece Withnail And I. "Its my favourite film" Depp told me at the London premier of his new film Public Enemies. "I know the script by heart and I still fall off the couch when I see it. I'm always quoting from it If I ever need a tonic that's what I put on my DVD - works every time!" "
