Prior to his appearance at Trowbridge on Sunday, Nick will be playing on Saturday at the Excalibur Family Fun Day in Marlborough.

This is a fundraiser for Marlborough Town FC and held at their Elcot Lane ground.

Kick-off at 12pm, and closes at midnight. Aside from live music throughout the day, there will be 6-a-side footie, stalls and a beer festival. Tickets are £15 for 2 adults + 2 children, or £6 per adult. This includes a free drink and burger!

Linn,

Any idea what time Nick will be on ... and whether he's doing a full set or not ?

Cheers,

Chris.

Evening, as I last heard.

Full set? Can I decline to comment after Barnsley? Rather depends on time he starts. But it would be at least an hour.

If I'm not down there in that posh Marlborough, I'll be up here in that Lundin too seeing the Delays and the Gullemots at Ben + Jerry's on Clap-ham Com-mon! Whichever I do they both involve grass so it's bound to rain.

i can see barnsley becoming a shorthand term for any gig mis-haps, as in:

"how'd the gig go"

"oh, it were a bit barnsley!"

"oh well, these things happen..."

Well, after a packed day visiting family and enduring traffic jams, we made it to Marlborough by 5:45. The little oriental gentleman in the petrol station didn't know where the football club was but had plenty of free guides to Marlborough, using which we easily found the ground, parked in a field, climbed through a fence and found not a lot happening. The bloke running the burger stand had never heard of Nick Harper, but found a programme and confirmed that Nick was expected to play at 7:00. He also explained how to gain admission, which involved handing over cash to a nice friendly lass, who gave us our red wristbands, programme and vouchers for free drinks and burgers. We then found a paper filled plastic bag, doubling as a seat, next to a speaker, and awaited events.

The bloke who was doing a soundcheck turned out to be Mike Booth, who very modestly played a few of his own pleasant but unremarkable songs to polite applause from the few adults inhabiting the tent. The kids frolicked regardless - mostly pink-clad little girls. We ate our burgers and drank our beer and noted the arrival of Nick, who got his own little cheer on his entrance. He set up most of his gear while Booth played, so it wasn't long before he was on himself, treating us to Temple, Guitar Man, Love Junky, Imaginary Friend, Galaxy Song, Love Is Music, probably something else that I've forgotten, and encoring with Blue Sky Thinking and Titties and Beer. He launched into his act with all the gusto I had been led to expect, thrashing his guitar and exploiting his echo and electronic gizmos to great effect. At times, the sound was too piercing, leaving my poor right ear ringing, but on the whole it was very good. Nick was in superb form, chatting to the audience, many of whom seemed to be family, and chucking in musical jokes like a bit of Kylie Na Na Na but also the emotionally intesne on Imaginary Friend. One or two notes that he held just went on for ever. While the electronics no doubt help to sustain it, it really is a phenomenal feat to blast out such a loud, tuneful note for so long. All in all, I was not at all disappointed with my first experience of Nick in the flesh. :thumbup1: Even 16 year old grandson Aaron, whose staple fare is Dance/Trance/ Rap etc, was impressed by Temple, though he then went out to play football during the rest of the concert. She who loves Cliff Richard was diplomatic but I don't think she enjoyed it very much :blushing:

If Mrs Bob hasn't been put off - ! - I think she might enjoy Nick more in a seated, theatre venue. His style does change, depending on the venue. And if you read his Festivals Q&A here, he said that himself.

Glad you got your free burger!
