It seems to be a facet of human nature to decide, somewhat arbitrarily, that you do or do not like something and then stick to that viewpoint doggedly and often without application of any sort of reason. Music is a particularly good example of this, since everyone has their own definition of what is good or bad and there's no universally-accepted way to measure quality.

One thing I have noticed though is that people seem to get even more defensive and stubborn when you try to persuade them of the merits of a particular artist, album or track. Consequently I have entirely given up on doing this. If people listen to the podcast and decide they like it, great. If not, I'm not going to try to "evangelise"... there are plenty of others with a more open mind that I can reach!

No, they're mostly the Yanks saying it. I think we need to stick something with a bit more punch up next - like Love Junky. I think they'd go for that kind of thing more. Who's Dr Hooey and lieudikne, or someone? Are they anyone I would know???:wink:

Regarding Paul's comment - I couldn't have put it better myself. Not everyone responds the same way to music. It is an extremely subjective thing. For me, listening to music is about chemistry. It's either there or it isn't.

So.. I'm not overly surprised at some of the comments I read about Blue Sky Thinking (no acronyms for Andy's benefit ;)). I chuckled at some of them.. but definitely not surprised. I love Nick's music, but not all of it triggers the same response in me. On the whole though.. I feel very strongly about it, that his music is a miracle of nature and that he should get WAY more recognition for it than he has done. So.. even with the limitations I have living so far away, I do what I can to help.

I agree with Paul.. it's quite hard to pursuade people to listen to, let alone agree with you on the merits of the music of a particular artist. If you do.. it has to be at the right time and place. I find that when I bulldoze people into listening to a favourite artist, they tend to resent or lose interest.

Perhaps when we were younger and that was all we were doing, just listening to music, it happened a lot more. Now, with life's heavy responsibilities and less time on our hands.. we tend to stick with what we know. Turning on so strongly to new music is a rare occurrence in my life now. But there you go - Nick's music is an exception for me.

I'll see what I can do! You must remember though that people usually only comment if they either love or hate stuff - and with all music, sorry, good music, it usually doesn't sit right on the pallet for the first few listens. It needs time to "grow" or as I acutally believe is happening, time for the musical ideas to be absorbed and understood.

Haven't seen either song appear on the LRC yet Critch, both songs are listed as 'new' and have no votes yet. I think it's time we found a back door in to this LRC lark.

Anyway, yes. the strategy is as before. If I spot the songs come around I'll post a message, or if I can't log on (at work) will PM PR PDQ. :-)

For those who are new to this:
Go to radioparadise.com
REGISTER (there should be a link on the Home page) - complete the procedure & log in.
Go to LRC (8th button along)
Click the "thumbs up" icon next to the song title (if the song is there, they are on a random rotating system, see above)
Done.

Repeat above with a different login id, & get others to do the same.

Result: Nick gets added to the main playlist, hopefully, as we achieved with "Blue Sky Thinking", and we get to read what the world thinks of it. :confused1:

A concise summary there, Peter. I would add that the time a song appears at the top of the list until it reaches the bottom (and disappears again) is not that long: 45-55 mins I think I timed it at once. So you have to be quick in getting there in time.

The way to beat the system apparently:

you need to find the song next time it appears and right click on the YES hand and then you can paste the link to who you wish.

Both songs are now listed as "reviewing" so should appear on the LRC quite soon.

I've been with Radio Paradise since the beginning 8 years ago pretty much and helped finance it for much of that time, the station is primary aimed at people who like music without having to listen to the news or the sport or the ads or the drivel most radio statoins churn out on a daily basis. Originally it was purely eclectic rock, but over the years it's broadened it's appeal in an attempt to survive without selling out per sé.

With regards to the comments on Nicks page, you have to remember that you are playing these songs to a lot of people from different tastes in music and Nicks style is somewhat "niche" and will undoubtadly attract negative comments from people who think their "guitar god" is the best.

My own opinion is that the mere fact these people have chosen to seek out the song page and bother to post is a good sign and means that Nick has effected them and their demi-god may well feel suitably threatened ;)

With regards to frustration with what Bill and Rebecca pick for the station, well i've seen songs get 96 for and 4 against only for them to throw it to the dogs and not make the main channel.

These days it's tough getting on the main channel, although as Pete may tell you it's not "impossible" to go directly to the main channel from an upload and pass the LRC altogether if the song fits.

Radio Paradise is a good place for Nicks music to appear, knowing the place like I do I think generally the people there accept great music regardless, the trick to getting your votes up though is to tell the masses of registered users on the site the songs on the LRC and click the link to vote.

well I actually agree with "electronicshaman", in fact I said the same almost to our Pete a while ago about BLue Sky Thinking.

I think all the comments are valid and I think even Nick refers to his troubles with the song with his comments "The one and only single i'll ever release".

I don't think it's indicative of his work myself. Technically it's a great song, but it is a little shy of much of his other work, I've certainly not got rose tinted specs, I don't really know how to respond to such comments other than to generally agree and point people in the direction of his website to listen to some other of Nick material and hope that they see his work for what it is.

I'd hate to be judged on just one song i've ever done really, although it is happening with Barcode for me and Pete a little lol.

i've seen things that are 94/6 get kicked out.

There is no fancy digram or formula to explain the LRC, at the end of the day it's Bill and Rebeccas radio station and if the song aint what they like it won't make the main playlist.

Nicks got 1 song on the main playlist me and Pete have got 2, he's signed we aren't, there is defiantely no publicity thing involved, that doesn't wash with Bill, I think it's just their preference, if a song aint right for them its a sorry, if they love it its onto the playlist, if they aren't sure they drop it onto the LRC and if you are lucky, really lucky it might then make the playlist, but the odds aren't good.

Just a shame that song got through I feel. It's kind of working against us, I think maybe aeroplane or foreplay/lovejunky wouldn't have polarised listeners to the same degree, but they didn't get past the review Channel. I suspect Bill just randomly decided to let BST through.

We need to let them know the breadth & depth of Nick's stuff, but have got off on the wrong foot a little bit.....

Agree totally with what you say, although BST DID get through don't forget. And, it has been interesting to read via the RP comments what non-Harper fans think. I think it gives an indication of what may appeal across the board - and pond!

Some odities in his comments though, we had one from him on one of our tracks he posted it on last week but our song hadnt been played since the beginning of the month.

Why would you go out of your way to find a song in there and post a negative comment, most people post comments as the songs come round on the playlist.

You should try listening to MBWR's and guess the singer, band or song without peeking at the track listings! I'm useless and can recognise the songs but not the players so I'd never make it on WWTBAM and EH or WL!!

MBWR means Mr Bill's Wild Rides from USA [the same Bill talking on the current Pods] which are wonderfully thematically chosen compilation CDs he carefully collages and lovingly distributes for reasonable amounts of cash [mind you exchange rate has gone a bit!].
