there's a lively debate going on on the Grauniad web site, started by some bloke who reckons that Pink Floyd are/were not prog rock.

I don't care either way, names like prog are just lazy journo tags to me and I'll listen to anything that takes my fancy regardless of such tags. There are some interesting comments i.e. that there can be good prog (VdGG) and bad prog (Yes/Genesis) and also a posting by someone claiming to be Bert Jansch................

Ages ago, I seem to remember an interview with Pete Townshend in which he claimed that "Live at Leeds" was a prog record - that would move the prog tag goal posts by a mile or two.

What if someone said that Abba were not really pop .............?

The tagging of any music like this is just fashion, n'est pas ?

That is the question! I think if you did an archival search on Mistlethrush exchange you'd find this has been previously discussed quite in depth. Human beings need labels it makes them feel comfortable with the changing inanimate. How would you define for instance your taste in music then - multi - genre? It's unlabel-able / unquantifiable. What I would really like to know is, what, for instance, would people be listening to in 100 years time say? Obviously Roy Harper! Sat round a camp fireside watching the world burn around them! Aye lad I knew you had it in you!
