View Full Version : Stormcock Song Club

I've had an idea - be warned! - and I wonder what others think.

You all probably know (well, UK'ers will) of Richard and Judy's Book Club? Well what about a Stormcock Song Club?

Each month a song of either Roy's or Nick's (Roy one month, Nick the next, then Roy and so on) is chosen by one of us (a different member each month) for everyone to listen to and discuss its lyrics, merit, what it might be about, what we like about it, the guitar bits(!), etc etc.

This may give an opportunity to listen to songs that perhaps we have never really listened to or liked before in a new way.

What does the panel think?

I think this is a brilliant idea!

well it might be an idea ... but not a new one for stormcockers ... a similar exercise was done a while back on the old email list ... got a lot of really good stuff ( to start of with ) .... but petered out eventually !!

I know there are various people on this new forum that seem to have the time to right lots of posts ( usually about anything but Nick and Roy ) ... so this might be an idea to channel their thoughts ... and get a bit more relevant !?!

I like the idea, but I could talk about any Roy song I know for a quite a while, so be warned! I was even thinking of writing my own reviews, song by song once I finish my collection (if that's possible). At the rate of one song a month, Roy would be in his mid eighties by the time we're done, and he'll (hopefully) have ten more albums by then.

Do we start with obscure ones like "Ladybird?" or stunners like "Hangman?" Do you need to own THE BOOK (I do!)?

Who chooses who gets to choose the song? Do we get to vote, will Roy give the ultimate rulings (that'd be cool!).

Do we observe Robert's Rules of Order?

It'd be nice to find a "critical mass" of Stormcockers to make it work!

Any member can choose any song they want.

I propose it changes on the 1st of each month, mainly to know where we are.

Towards the end of the month the first member to post their wish to do the following month's song (first come, first served) can do so. Bearing in mind that it will be a Roy/Nick song on alternate months: six each per year (if it keeps up!)

Can I bagsy starting though?!

Can I bagsy starting though?!

Is that Queen's Engrisch (sic) for you want the first pick?

I already voted today, but since you suggested it (at least this time, according to BC) I have no objections. Don't think it's my decision, though. Shouldn't Paul add a new portal dedicated to the SONG OF THE MONTH?

Close to my 125th post. Scary...

I'll set up a "Song of the Month" forum in a bit. This forum will be heavily policed...

When we did a similar effort on the email list moons ago we had the existing nominee choose the next person. So, we'll start with HarperPR this month with her pick of songs (from either artist, it doesn't matter who we start with) and at the end of the month she can pick the next person who's interested in doing one, and I'd suggest they let her know via private message that they want to do it.

Sound workable?

On reflection, I think it is better to have the monthly discussions in this forum (Words and Music) to avoid cluttering up the forum list with more stuff. This forum seems ideal for the purpose and is under used anyway...

I'm cool with everything in previous two posts. I will away to listen to my 'Song for November' and post in next day or two. (If you know me well enough you might already know what I will kick off with!)

Makes me think of your response to one of my first posts, a personal fave from '75 and the first Roy I ever heard!

I have to hand over the baton come Dec 1, so any offers for the honour? Remember, December is Roy song month.

I listened to One For All today as it came up on the iPod. It's got some great guitar twiddling but I didn't notice the words... Perhaps I should look them up and we can discuss that?

Is that a firm offer or a tentative suggestion.:) Either way, if you wanna go for it...?

No obligation, NC, but I think you may be itching to discuss a Roy song!:)

So...if you want to start a new thread Dec 1 or later - the floor's yours.

Look at the TIME. Almost missed your post this time around.

I've been thinking of adding more musical (versus lyrical) commentary to my post for BTPMITG. I was waiting for the CD to hear it first.

And I admit I've thought of what ROY song(s) I would pick. I don't know what songs were discussed in previous attempts... Don't want to duplicate. (does anyone want to PM a list?)

I think HarperPR and I would like to see more DEBATE about what songs meanings are to different listeners. There is also the experience of listening to great music without trying to dissect it for meaning as I tend to do.

On a humorous note, the writer in me imagines my commentary being added to various announcements of Nick and Roy's music without my knowledge until one day a Beeb News Crew knocks on my door, having discovered my true identity (which I haven't really hidden. Also, the writer in me just loves IRONY).

If there are no objections, I'll aim to make my pick in a couple days. Jack.

Itching? Roy's like a case of poison ivy that won't go away... but in a GOOD way!

With that, I blame HarperPR for inspiring me (egging me on?) to post what may be the single longest post in STORMCOCK history, even after you subtract Roy's lyrics.

I hope it's a good sign that our number of active members has recently had an uptick after a multiple-month slide mirroring the world economy. I was beginning to have an inferiority complex!...

January is Nick song month.

Critch will be doing the honours with a 2,000 word ( - :D - ) essay on one of his favourite songs.

That may happen Jan 1 - or 2 if he's still recovering from New Year's Eve!

And don't screw up, Critch! :D:wink::biggrin:

This is my official passing of the baton to Critch for the month of January 2009. Remember, just because I've already posted enough to fill a small book (HarperPR is already negotiating for the publication rights:wink:) doesn't mean you have to exceed my word count. And just because we're all wishing you success in quickly finding new work, this is not the time nor the place for you to be posting your resume! (Oh what the heck. Go ahead...)

Enough of my Yankee cheekiness! Show us how it's done, Critch!

Thanks Noceleb! I've still not decided what song I'm going to be doing though... I think that maybe a problem. So many to choose!

i suppose if theres a song we feel we would like to discuss we could always just start a new thread about it in the words and music section without waiting for the right month to come around. a radical suggestion, i know.

Your expression of your opinion is always RIGHT, Critch. I guess that means it's DEFINITELY OKAY! I think the wonderful thing about Roy and poetry/lyrics in general is they can have multiple meanings. Only ROY could say your interpretation is NOT okay, but he'd probably say it IS/ISN'T what he intended.

Don't try this reply/rationalization in a poetry class unless you want a poor grade! (or until you've given the "right" answer first).

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

What about ScotPaulaBear?

I suppose regulars don't have enough time? Occasional surfers might feel timid about offering suggestions? I know I imagined EVERY single Stormcocker would debate my opinions of THE GAME and it would be wildly popular.

I think this site is 90% social/musical/concert stuff and about 10% intellectual because detailed analyses are too time consuming for a quick browse.

Anyone who wants to contribute is welcome, in my book!

Has it really been eleven days since my last post?

Thanks, Andi.

Getting ready for my garden and all the Spring chores, working out an arrangement for "Hangman" I can play. Keeping busy. I forgot how much else I was missing while my brother was fighting his cancer. I've missed Roy for so long, it took me six months and 200 posts to get anywhere near caught up.

I love hearing about Roy's plans and the various performances you all get to see over there. Chicago's a great BLUES town, but can we get Roy to perform at this year's LOLLAPALOOZA festival so I have something else to post for a change?

I was just looking for info on the ITHACA, NY music festival held in Trumansburg, NY every Summer with dozens of local Bluegrass, Country and Rock acts, as well as musical acts from around the world. Why not get Nick to perform there? I graduated Ithaca College (an excellent Music School, BTW) in 1981 and always wanted to get to the Festival held every year in July or August.

It is a wonderful atmosphere and a chance to meet hundreds of lesser-known musicians over several days.

Couldn't find the precise link I was looking for. The City of Ithaca, NY has completely changed their webpage, but I'll bet the store IthacaGuitarWorks can tell you where you need to go.

Please let me know any US dates as they become available.

Twice the reply, twice the fun. Pittsburgh is the closest, but it's Pittsburgh! (just kidding PA fans of Harpers young and young-at-heart).

If you're going to be there, Paula, let me know. As I recall, you hail from Boston originally, so maybe you're exaggerating the degree of difficulty.

As for me, it's more a degree of laziness masquerading as something else!

If I meet you there, I'll know you instantly from your funny accent!

Do you elide or enunciate your "R" (does Bah-ston win out or Edinbur-r-rgh?).
Or maybe you're a Pirate from Pittsburgh? R, matey.

See other thread - I will DEFINITELY be there. With a capital DEFINITELY. :D Most of my trip will be with the family, but I get my 4 days of silliness in the middle haha... Do I win for miles per gig?

And I still have my American accent (though I throw around very Scottish slang with it!) - it never was much of a stereotypical "Cheers / pahk yah cah in Hahvahd Yahd" accent though, I have the charming nasal tones of my NY/RI family *sigh*... you'll know me from my general loudness and hair dyed some very bright colour I'd imagine!

Well, at least you don't have a Peabody MASS accent like my old buddy Gary Gershaw (he was a guest Postal Carrier delivering "Bills" to Coach in an opening segment on an early "Cheers.").

I'll keep the date in mind, but I don't know at this time. Maybe Roy can join us? (Ok, I guess MAYBE I missed my chance to see Roy in the US).

BTW, Da Coach (Ditka) was from the Pittsburgh area, so it ain't dat bad. Maybe we can visit his childhood home?:D

Did Roy actually live in USA for a while or just the odd flying visit? Have just ordered Passions of Great Fortune at last. From the previous reviews I gather I will not be disappointed?! Even the title's a conundrum....it's not the fortuitous money that counts it's the passion in making it in an innocent way....probably like love....

Seems to me Roy lived in California for a couple years in the 70's. Did I read that in his book?
