View Full Version : TV heaven...or TV hell

Is Outnumbered (BBC1 Sat/repeated BBC2 Wed) currently the best and funniest comedy series on TV? The first series somehow passed me by, but am loving the second. The young actress Ramona Marquez who plays Karen is wonderful. I think it was one of the writers who described her as having 'the face of an angel and the mind of a barrister' - she's only seven too! I believe it's part improvised which is probably why the children's dialogue flows so well.
It just pips my other love, Lead Balloon. Love the characters, especially the student daughter and her boyfriend (really funny last week when their band's video got spotted on You Tube by an ad agency who wanted to use the song for an air freshener commercial.) and the dour au pair Magda, who is always talking about things 'in my country' and that she is 'werry unhairpy'! Great stuff.
And if those are heaven, is hell I'm A Celebrity...? If I see one more 'meal' of wriggly worms or some animal's penis, I shall scream! David Van Day and Nicola McLean, while both obnoxious, have been eminently watchable though, I have to admit. But surely Van Day won't win...will he?

With apologies to Proctor & Bergman who never apologized to Shakespeare for the above literary unlicensed. I'm on a roll, just posted my SOTM and can't stop.
Don't know any of those shows here in America. Basic Cable cut at least 4 channels today (they haven't learned the law of supply and demand yet!).
Is that "Lead Balloon" as in the one the other balloons have to follow?
I love "NCIS" here in America, also after missing the first season. The son of one of Roy's collaborators plays a Forensics Doctor, Dr. Mallard (David McCallum) known as "Ducky."

I watch House. Lots and lots and lots of House. I bought the box set recently and I'm gradually working my way though. Absolutely Genius. Hugh Laurie is brilliant. I've loved him (but not in a gay way!) since I was about 10 watching Jeeves and Wooster.

Bertie Wooster is a fussy sort of golfer. The least little thing puts him off. Ladies chattering away, dogs yapping.... But nothing so much as the fluttering of Butterflies in the neighboring fairway.
Loved Jeeves too. His dry wit, that is...
House is perfectly obnoxious, but he always saves the patient by finding the right diagnosis just in time. (Oh wait, that's the writers...) Freaked when I first realized it was Bertie Wooster...
I say. What ho, Jeeves!

TNT's new show "Leverage" just premiered. Stars Timothy Hutton ("Ordinary People") as a former insurance investigator who hires crooks he couldn't catch to do good and play Robin Hood. Except there's enough booty for all the bad guys to go on doing good deeds.
Gina Bellman (Ditsy traffic reporter from "Coupling") is a horrible actress who is suddenly believable when she's grifting the mark.
Dry wit and clever plot twists and independent production values make this a must watch! Premiere was shot in CHICAGO along the river and in the Loop (all downtown locations I recognized).

Yes, caught an episode a week or two before, not much else going on at the weekend for me these days ;)
I saw the airport clip on youtube, but didn't find that part so funny. On the one hand, the series is hilarious but there are moments of cliched slapstick that weaken things somewhat. I'm still looking for the clip I referred to earlier .
Haven't seen Spaced, it's the just the news for me and Inspector Morse, oh! and River Cottage too if I can find an episode showing :D Though I suppose the question these days is 'has Hugh F-W really downsized at all?' His whole RC empire seems to have grown since those early, halcyon days based in the original River Cottage (which had previously been the old Etonians holiday retreat anyway).

I remember the remake of "Fawlty Towers" w/ John Laroquette. I think it managed 13 episodes--one more than John Cleese's original--but it failed (it wasn't awful, it was "different"). I remember there was a US remake of "Coupling" that failed quickly. Still can't watch "The Office" or anything with Steve Carrell (or Will Farrell-rhymes) in it. Fox-TV did a movie of Doctor Who where Sylvester McCoy passed the torch to the... eighth??? Back to the Scots...
I have to agree... the originals are generally the best. Of course, we usually see them on PBS without commercials

PD is right - Sapphire and Steele was terrifying. I still remember one episode where a character without a face could trap people into photgraphs. Sorry gone waaaaaaay off topic now.
Yes you did, and wibbled in my podcast thread!:D
Sapphire and Steele...? was that the one with David McCallum in? Was it 70s or 80s? Good recall to remember a certain episode. I can remember the name, but not what it was about. Were they investigators of some sort?
What was the name of that 60s (I think) series which I saw on one of those TV clips of the past progs, which starred Joel Fabiani and maybe Rosemary Nicol and it was a team that (again, I think) had some kind of psychic link and communicated that way?
And who remembers the koala bears Tinga and Tucker, and their friends Willie Wombat and Katie Kookaburra in an Australian children's series?!

Did anyone see FlashForward tonight? (repeated tomorrow I think, if you didn't). I'm hooked! Joseph Fiennes is always a good watch (wondered how he gets on with his ex-sister-in-law?!). If you don't know what it's about, it's basically that the whole world blanks out for 2 mins and when they come round they all have had a vision in that time of what they'll be doing on a certain date, six months on. It's made by the same people who did Lost, so not surprisingly it's running for 22 weeks! I haven't read the book it's based on, but rather wish I could have a vision too - of the end! Lol. That's a long TV haul.

Flashforward is GREAT so far, the big man and I are totally enthralled by it - and we do have the same fear that it'll go the way of Lost but I don't think JJ Abrams has anything to do with it so it's probably safe...
Harper's Island was a fantastic series, would highly recommend it (for those with a strong stomach for blood splatter LOL), we were totally befuddled by the perpetrator(s) almost to the very end!
And yet another Masterchef series down, very enjoyable it was but the brand is getting a bit ubiquitous. I figure the BBC will have it on all year round soon at this rate!

I thought "LIFE" was an excellent cop drama, poorly rated, probably over after a couple years on NBC earlier this year.
NCIS is my favorite drama now, and has been since I discovered it in its second season (balanced between witty and gritty). On CBS.
If you ever liked STAR WARS, check out the animated series CLONE WARS (the newer version) now in its second season on the Cartoon Network. Like what "FLASH GORDON" tried to be 50+ years ago (I'm reaching here...).
MONK is a fair Comedy/Drama that is coming to a close, sure to bring tears and cheers assuming he finally solves his wife's murder.
Get all my news from THE DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart (not really, but his commentary is both more cutting AND more thorough and fair than the REAL NEWS).
I can second the vote for NCIS. What I initially feared was a jingoistic pro-military copy of CSI has turned into a great drama that I really like (we're working our way through series 4 at the moment).

It's a different producer and development team than CSI. Same producer as Magnum P.I. and JAG. Not without some "patriotic" drivel, but generally within the story and the positive ethos of the basic characters. Plus, it has David McCallum (sp?)/(son of Roy's former studio musician)/(aka Ilya Kuryakin) as Dr. Mallard -- "Duckie" -- in it. I think it recently passed CSI as #1 rated drama in the U.S.

Is that Patty Griffin backing up RP in BofJ? Patty (or Patti?) was on "Austin City Limits" maybe three weeks ago, a week before John Paul Jones' and David Grohl's "Them Crooked Vultures" was also on A.C.L. (Supposed to have full episodes at pbs.org). Vultures was pretty cool, JPJ played any number of odd bass instruments with Grohl on drums.
