You Tube - LiteGauge Roy Covers

For those folks that like to play guitar and want to get some clues as to how to play some of Roy's songs I recommend you check out a user called LiteGauge (http://www.youtube.com/user/LiteGauge) on You Tube.

His playing is excellent and he he has posted a number of Roy's songs as well as Bert Jansch, Incredible String Band, John Renbourne and many other excellent tunes.

In fact last Friday I asked him if he could give it a go and over the weekend I see he has posted it up. Below are the tuning and chords he sent me in a separate message.

While as I remember it Roy doesn't use a capo for North Country I think Litegauge will have his guitar tuned to A 440, Roy as we all know tunes his guitar quite a bit lower and so Liteguage has used the capo to get in the same tuning. Any road up it's made my day and I can't wait to get home and try it out as I've spent years not getting anywhere near sussing it out.

The song can also merit fingerpicking acoustic tweve string attention as well! The chords and strings [closed and open] really resonate nicely in harmony with the melody.

12 string is what I have at home, so shall be trying it out tonight with full finger picking etc :)


Have to wait till I'm at the girlfriends on Wednesday night to try it out on my six string. But first I will be trying out Litegauge's take on Cherishing The Lonesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxhWwgzNsik&feature=channel_page) in Open D first. I don't like messing with the tuning of my twelve string as it takes a while to get it settled down plus it's nearly as old as me so I like to be careful with that neck Eugene :)

This has always been of interest, and a puzzler for me. Thanks! I'll have to try it out after tomorrow's last Blues class of the year. That major 7th ought to stand out, compared to all the blues I've been trying. I play Cherishing too, but haven't figured it all out. Most of Roy's songs I just prefer to sing along...

Um, puzzled. If liteguage is actually in the same key then Roy must be playing using C shapes or D shapes but I reckon I've seen Roy using the same G shapes so that means he's singing a lot lower or else L is doing a whole octave down or something. Anyway, there isn't a capo invented yet that can lower the tuning :;)

Thanks for the youTube link, it's great to be able to see the left hand of a guitarist. I'm forever shouting at the cameramen on TV for zooming in on the face or the right hand, or a left earlobe or something when I need to see the chords to hear the tune properly.

I think I am wrong about which key Litegauge is playing in. I think he has used the capo to get it into a key he can sing it in. Apologies for any confuzzsion :)

I to shout at the telly when they focus on the bleeding soundhole of the guitar rather than the fret hand. I used to think that the Old Grey Whistle Test camera men used to focus more on the frethand than Top of the Pops cameramen who always went for the soundhole/pickup end of the guitar but it was just in my head :confused1:
