Apologies for claiming to be evangelistic again: this time I have a question, which has undoubtedly been aired before, but I can't trace the threads.

Can anyone come up with a list of covers of Roy's material beyond Bush/Gabriel and Susanna?

The reason I ask is that Iain Anderson (who has been persuaded to play Roy and Nick before) has reduced his weekly output to three nights a week. The fourth (Thursday) night - 22.30 - 00.30 - has been taken over by a young whippersnapper by the name of Roddy Hart, who is quite a fine musician himself, a major Dylan fan, and was responsible for putting together the Dylan Concert at last year's Celtic Connections. He plays some "interesting" stuff most weeks.
I've spent quite a few emails/Facebook contacts persuading him that Roy is worth as much as Dr Z in terms of song quality ... .

Roddy has a feature in his show in which he puts together 3-4 songs from a featured artist, but most will be covers. Hence my original question: if we can put together a decent sample of His Royness's output (and I'm quite happy with Bush/Gabriel and Susanna, but feel there must be more), I'm pretty sure Roddy could be persuaded to put the sequence together.

Forgive my apparent ignorance in this matter, but "covers" is not something I associate with Roy and so have rarely considered before.

Tootle pip, and all that.
Clarke o' th' Chilly North

Hi all,

I've recently discovered Roy Harper (don't ask me where I've been hiding all these years!) and I'm really taken. His unique style is hypnotic and fascinating.

I found the Sophisticated Beggar album on Spotify and got hooked. Unfortunately that's the only album available on Spotify, but I'm sufficiently impressed to buy a few CDs. After reading a bit about him it was clear I needed to hear Storkcock, and judging by the namesake of this site it's clear it's regarded as his best work, so I've just purchased that.

The thing is, and this may well be my current naivety on Roy, I prefer Sophisticated Beggar! Some of the tracks on SB just flaw me. I've really enjoyed my first few listens to SC but so far it's not had the same mesmerizing effect on me as tracks such as Blackpool, Girlie, and SB itself.

So, given Roy's bountiful back-catalog, I wondered which albums the experts would recommend for a newbie given my tastes.

Look forward to hearing any comments.

I was having a good tidy up today and found something I thought had been long lost.
It's a stereo mini-disc recording (which I've just converted to flac):

Roy Harper @ Canterbury Fayre - 23rd August 2003

Tracks:

1 Tom Tiddlers Ground
2 Don't You Grieve
3 Pinches of Salt
4 Highway Blues
5 When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease
6 Me and My Woman
7 North Country
8 One Man Rock and Roll Band

Duration is about 1hr 10 mins, with lots of between-track banter.
Roy caught us on the hop by coming on early, and I didn't check the recording level so it's slightly hot.
Nevertheless, it sounds lovely and was a great show.

I don't really know what to do with the recording but it really deserves to be heard. I'm happy to share this if anyone is interested?
