I picked up this woman's most recent album on a bit of a whim. It was called "Hadestown", and described itself as a "folk opera based on the Orpheus myth set in post-apocalyptic depression-era America". Reading that, I know it was going to be either awful or awesome. Lucky me, it turned out to be awesome, easily one of my favorite albums this year (or any year). http://www.anaismitchell.com/ Part of its charm is certainly its stellar cast of American folk/indie performers. But the essential ingredient is Anais herself, her way with a musical hook, her brilliant lyrics...She came to play in Berkeley, CA recently, and even with just her and one or two people backing her up, the performance shone. Amazing and highly recommended for you Harper fans.
