I was thinking that we talk a lot on here about favourite albums/tracks of the Harpers, well what about our favourite artwork/covers?
Well, I meant HARPER ones! But if you want to 'go both ways' on this as well - - maybe it should be Off Topic.
Valentine, and what I recall of the American release of HQ (I think Roy was dressed as a Cricketer), my first 2 Roy albums. I also like the design of The Dream Society.
best - Lifemask. worst - the reissue of "Work of Heart" (closely followed by the original airbrushed heart/key nightmare)
It's gotta be "FLASHES FROM THE ARCHIVES OF OBLIVION", not just for the front of the cover but all the great pics in the gatefold and the quote on the back.
Favourite Album Covers: ROY: Bullinamingvase (still got the vinyl copy); HQ (still got the vinyl copy); Jugula; Dream Society; Green Man. NICK: Light At The End Of The Kennel (reissue); Instrumental; Harperspace. OTHERS: Jethro Tull ~ Stand Up; Small Faces ~ Ogden's Nut Gone Flake; Jimi Hendrix ~ Electric Ladyland; Steve Miller ~ Book Of Dreams; Strawbs ~ Grave New World; Beatles ~ Sgt. Pepper; Savoy Brown ~ Blue Matter; Greenslade ~ Time & Tide; Frank Zappa ~ Hot Rats; Caravan ~In The Land Of Pink & Grey; Talk Talk ~ Colour Of Spring ...... better stop now ... getting carried away:blushing:
Others; If we're doing others then King Crimson's The Court of the Crimson King, has to be up there, as does Frank Zappa's Uncle Meat, and Physical Graffiti, Led Zep, sleeve photography by a certain Mr. Harry Rope..
i like the heart/key nightmare, its so ludicrous its quite charming i also like the Born in Captivity cover a lot
I would have to say Lifemask of Roy's, and Seed for Nick, I think. Although I agree with pconpie about the pics in the Flashes gatefold - certainly the best I've seen of Nick!
The original vinyl Lifemask woud have to be my favourite Roy cover I'm not sure that I could choose one of Nick's, which might say more about the role of the CD cover as against that of vinyl, but if pushed I'd probably choose Blood Songs, just because it looks different As to generally, it is hard to choose from so many good ones, but today's choice (subject to change tomorrow, obviously) would be Pink Flag by Wire, closely followed by English Settlement by XTC and New Boots and Panties by Ian Dury
Vinyl? The Mail On Sunday article entitled "How Britain got it's groove back" 12 July 2009. Can scan it up tomorrow if not up here somewhere? c/a
Mountain' A Tour? The Harper's must be getting big, now that Eric Idle is parodying them. Thanks for the cover, Pete!
