I posted this to the original stormcock email list ... but just in case anyone is ONLY using this interface : Hi, As I have mentioned before, I love the music of James Varda and have bought all his CD's - all two of them !! btw I still highly recommend James's first CD ( Hunger ) that is available from http://www.jamesvarda.com/shop.html for a bargain price of less than 8 quid Anyway, as he's only released 2 CD's ... and he doesn't play live very often ... I'm desperate to get hold of any bootlegs that people may have of him. i.e. in 1988 did any of the folk bootlegging Roy's gigs actually press record on their tape (?) recorders and get James's support act ? If anyone does have any extra material for James .. then I'd love to get a copy ... either as a stormcock vine or just a copy posted/emailed to me. So if you have any stuff, then please get in touch ... off-cock if you want to keep stum ( iam@bigchris.co.uk ) and I'll sort you out with either blank CD's ( or cassette's if that's what they are on ) or perhaps I could swap you for some Roy stuff that I know you won't ( or you are pretty unlikely ) to have. Finally, this is a link to an interview with james; where he mentions Roy a couple of times : http://www.triste.co.uk/jamesvarda.htm Cheers, Chris.
I can only think of 2 people who may be able to help with that Chris, one is James Varda and the other is maybe Darren? Altough I'm sure you've already had the same thought.... good luck anyway. I can point you at an episode of Bob's Rucksack where he features though....
I have both his albums as well Chris, and I think he's great. I don't have any recordings in my collection. I do know one or two Hertford-based 'cockers who may though and I think you know them too.
An Idea ... I spoke to Darren Crisp this evening and he does indeed have some old Varda stuff hidden in the vaults of his loft ... which might turn up one day ?!? We got talking about various things and then came up with a cracking idea ( IMHO ) of how to potentially get to hear some of his old stuff ... and that was to get PD to do a podcast with James ... I'm sure he'll have some stories about Roy from when he supported him !?! How about it Paul ? http://www.jamesvarda.com/
Ha! Well, there's nothing to lose I suppose. Actually I have a number of people in mind to contact shortly for interviews next year, goodness knows whether any of them will actually agree to do it Thanks Paul.

I know this is an old post, but I saw James Varda support Roy a few times in the 80's, and remember being impressed, I'd be interested to hear some of his stuff again too Chris.
Well here I am replying a few years late to Paul's question. But it's not the answer you were looking for I'm afraid Chris. El and I taped quite a lot of Roy's gigs during the James Varda era but I'm sure we didn't tape James' support slots as far as I recall. Most of those tapes are still up in my attic, but I wonder if they would reproduce now, after many years of hot summers etc. and not being wound. I mailed a bunch of them to Joe Pezack (I think) in the US who burned the gig's he wanted onto CD and sent back the rest of the tapes, and as far as I know I still have those. Maybe I'll go and look for those soon . . . I've been thinking I'd love to find the tape I think I rambled on about when I did Paul's first podcast.
OH Steve - you got my hopes up then when I saw a reply to this thread !! I actually talked about James to various people at various times over the weekend and there are a lot of fond memories about his support gigs ... but alas no boot-legs ( yet !? ). I wonder if James was actually at the gig on Saturday ? Now THAT would have been amazing if he did the support slot, instead of JW !!
