Members Stage

Rainbow I've got a zappy little nappy

Here's a suggestion ... how about a corner somewhere on the site where forum members can submit cover versions of Harper songs/tunes, as mp3 or vid, just as a bit of fun and in a true spirit of homage also and hopefully without causing copyright hassles. Maybe adding tab notation if it's a song/tune not already covered by Aero or Rooben ... just for us Harper fans to share and hopefully enjoy.
The recent 'Play like Harpic' thread submitted by Stevo just sparked off this idea and the need to draw other similar threads together in one corner seemed a good idea.
I sometimes submit tunes to another forum where they have a corner like this called 'Members Stage', with songs from all genres being submitted, and it seems to go down quite well and has quite a degree of support and encouragement. I just wondered what other members/moderators think of such an idea for Harper songs only and if there would be enough interest?
    Cheers ... Rainbow:) :cheers2:

NoCelebrity Aye lad, I knew you had it in you

    Art for (Rainbow) ARC's sake

Sounds OK to me, but I've been planning to submit various stuff before and I never get around to recording it. I'm planning on getting caught up with some of these promises when I get my new MAC and am playing around with it.

Sure hope to see others' contributions. I think most Stormcockers are just fans, but some of us like to see other's efforts.

Note: Master pd's note in the CHAT BOX, so don't expect his comment for a few more days.

May already fit under music, lyrics or some other thread, too.

    Don't you Grieve

This seems like a good idea, like a kind of self-organised splinters 4, and ongoing too. It will be interesting to hear which songs people choose to cover, and maybe hear some very lose interpretations of the songs as well.

I'd better get "Don't you grieve" in quick then...

I'll try and do one RH cover most weeks on the Ustream show

Hey, nice one Andy, that's the ticket ... just the sort of thing I had in mind ... keep 'em coming :thumbup1:

NoCelebrity: if you get that Mac I can recommend using GarageBand for recordings ... very intuitive and you can get great sounding results:wink:

andi cheers for the myspace links :coolgleamA:

    Cheers ... Rainbow:)

Liked it Andy's (both of ya that is) you put your own style into it. Whereas mine is a sad travesty of Roy's beautiful song so apologies to Roy mostly and anyone who makes it to the end of the whole six minutes :blushing:

I don't have a video camera so can't match the technological wonders that Andy managed what with logging in fans as he is doing his recording and such but here is a wee mp3 of Tom Tiddlers Ground I recorded a while back using my crappy 80kbps mono ipod voice memo mic.

I think the tab came from Aaro's website albeit I think I found out myself that a chord was missed out dunno what it is called it swaps between a D but with the back end of the D chord removed to leave one finger only holding down the D on the B string ie second string third fret. The guitar is an Eko 12 string which is nearly as old as me.

As you may notice singing isn't my thing (guitar playing isn't much better) on the positive side I'm not very loud either

    Bravo 'fuzzy' :hurray:
Sounds like you did that one in one take and some real nice guitar pickin' going on :coolgleamA:
    Keep 'em coming:wink:

Seems like there's a bit of interest in this area.On the other forum I mentioned in my original post, the members stage is a separate little corner and members submit a song/tune under the thread heading of the title of the song so other members get to submit comments at will and over a period of time.
It seems to work well and the comments are given in a generous spirit of encouragement ... if something doesn't really work then generally there are very few comments ... simples:)
Andy mentioned 'like an ongoing Splinters 4' ... well it could be if the songs/tunes submitted were originals as well as Harper covers ... could even include covers of other artists of similar genre.
    I'm just wondering aloud.

    Cheers ... Rainbow

Thanks, sure was one take. I don't think I'm that clever with Garageband that I could redo / fix the dodgy singing bits. Or possibly I could I suppose have recorded the guitar separately from the singing, that would have made it easier to sort out.

I think part of the reason why I try to learn songs would be to get to the point where I would able to actually perform them. What Andy Roberts did above with guitar and singing would be great, it's kind of the point. If you have a read of Andy's description of how he came to write his song Gernika it just illustrates what's so lovely about sharing songs with people.

There are some songs where the guitar part is tricky and my useless brain can't manage to sing and play the guitar at the same time but I am a bloke so multi tasking let alone singing in tune is beyond me. :blushing:

My problem with the Splinters thing was that I haven't got an original bone in my body so any tune I come up with always turns out to be something I've heard before!

I remember watching a tv prog of a Stephan Grappelli gig, at one point the guitar player (sadly can't remember his name) played a solo of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star but all as harmonics in Jazz kind of a way. Having seen this I was one night trying to work out the chords for Twinkle Twinkle but using as many jazzy augmented's and diminished 9ths etc and came up with something that sounded rather nice which even the missus
thought sounded good (she's a music teacher) but only a few days later I was watching Postman Pat on the telly with the kids (as you do ) only to discover the version of Twinkle Twinkle I had worked out was in fact the background music to Postman Pat and all I had done was sub-consciously regurgitated it / stolen it dooh

    Hi all

I'm not ignoring the Member Stage idea - I think it's an excellent one! I've been up to my ears in stuff since I got back from holiday but I'm having a ponder and I'll set something up soon. I'm not 100% convinced it needs a separate forum but we can try it and see how it goes. I want to see if there are any plugins for the forum software that might help smooth things along first.

Dr. Doom that was great ... cool vocal and guitar ... looks like we might be getting a permanent venue so if you've got any more ...

andi: looks like shaun is going for 'Stan' for the first snippet so can I request a tab for that one if you've managed to work it all out ... or what you have maybe? Pretty please ... I'd love to try that one out sometime

    Happy daze ... Rainbow:)

Yeah, you've got it andi ... first track, disc 1 'Born In Captivity' from the 2CD 'Born In Captivity/Work Of Heart' ... great track from a great album. I don't know if you actually had that one in mind with your first snippet, but I recognised some familiar chords from that track 'Stan'.:m2:

    Cheers ... Rainbow:)
