    Does anyone know what tuning 'Miles Remains' might be in please? It is probably my favourite Roy tune and I've never really been able to fathom out how to play it. I got close to working out a couple of parts some years ago but I've lost them now.:(
    If anyone has a full transcription that would be great (never come across anything on the net so far) ... or if anyone is currently struggling to tab this one I'd be happy to collaberate :wink:

    cheers

    Thanks Shaun ... yes, it's a magical performance ... I've had the dvd (Beyond The Door) for some time and that clip is a help (though I tend to lose concentration and just get lost in the beauty of the sound ... miles away and gone).

    Miles beyond..

    Yes... and Forget Me Not on a recent Pod. I try and hear the tuning used first whilst watching with guitar in hand and then see if the finger positions visible on the fretboard sound right.

    what a great song

    i think its in DADGAD or else standard with the low E dropped to d. i used to be able to play it but i havent played a guitar for over a year and dont have one here to check...

    I think the top 4 strings are standard tuning, but I cannot work out the lower two strings.
    The video from beyond the door is not that clear, as the shots don't show the fretboard that clear.
    I need to spend more transcribine this, may try later this week.

    tuning

    Are you sure this isn't DADGAD or at least a dropped D. Looking at that video he does seem to play the descending bass bit with 1 finger only.

    Anyway I am open to listening to the more experienced guitar players on this forum coz I am more than likely wrong!

    I don't know why but whilst listening to Mile Away I couldn't get "Jack of Hearts" out of my head - which is another song I haven't heard in an age.

    I tried it this morning after the earlier post in standard tuning taken down 3 steps (the tuning I picked the guitar up in) and worked out a couple of sections and dropped the bass string down 2 steps further and began to get close to the bass string riffs so it's got to be a dropped d format. I'll have another go tomorrow when my long-suffering wife & kids are out shopping and I've got the house to myself ;-) Thanks for the input and pointers guys ... much appreciated :)

    So..

    It's obviously nothing to do with the ol'D dropped guitar stuff. We are going down to the depths of piano string gauge wire business here. A? A#?G?G#? C minus? Just have to afford an instrument to reach there. Great innit? Must buy a Lowd[o]en or a Wainwright!

    I got a couple of hours to myself before the family returned from shopping and made a fair bit of progress. Tuning is (low to high * = sharp)

    C* F* B E G* C* (ie standard tuning down from E to Csharp) then tune bass string down to B (so dropped d format but all down 3 steps)

    Intro., then chord shape 1 + 2 + bassline on lowest string tuned to B (4 times)
    then chord shape 3 + 4 + bass string (3 times)
    then chord shape 4 + 5 then strum strings 1~5 open, followed by the bit I can't work out (possibly Fmaj7th + ?? + lead bits and some fretless bass) and into repeat of this whole section ... third time brings you to vocal passage 'miles away & gone ... (by this time I am) and repeat to end passage with extended delayed chord and guitar pick of top string above tuning peg ... phew!!!

    Chord shapes:

    No.1 = 10th.fret str.2 / 11th.fret str.3 / 12th.fret str.4

    No.2 = 8th. fret str.2 / 9th.fret str.3 / 10th.fret str. 4

    No.3 = 7th. fret str.1 / 8th.fret str.2 / 9th.fret strings 3 & 4

    No.4 = 10th. fret strings 1 & 2 / 11th. fret str.3

    No.5 = 8th. fret strings 1 & 2 / 9th. fret str.3

    The section I can't work out starts around 1:50 mark on the CD after the open string strum on strings 1~5 ... hope some of this makes sense ... apologies for non standard notation attempts. If anyone can help out on the tricky section I'd be most grateful ... I've just chucked in some fluffy lead bits on the mp3 at this point and where it's repeated later ... just to keep some of the timing and the feel going ... and it's just one quick take to use as a guide track. I played along to the record (sorry showing my age now)
    CD ... and apart from the bit I'm currently stuck on ... it sounds about right.
    Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated :wink:

    Cheers ... Rainbow :biggrin:

    Wow, thanks! I prefer the DVD version too, though I can only LISTEN to the CD of it in the USA.

    Managed to get this one organised as a jpeg of hand-written transcription with tuning/chord shapes and sequence to print out, but I'm not savvy enough to post it into this post to view ... so here's the link to the jpeg to download:

    If some clever soul knows how to show it in this thread or can sort it for me I'd be most obliged :wink

    Thank you also!! Thousandly with seriousness.

    Thoroughly appreciate exactly where you're coming from; just need the guitar to accomodate!!! And thankfully my non-arthritic fingerboard!

    You're welcome andi and thanks :biggrin:

    Shaun, thanks for that mate ... very neat solution :wink:

    I'll maybe have a go at recording this one a bit later and then I'll be able to hear better if it's anywhere close ... then I can post it later in place of the original guide track.

    Here's the updated guide track link for basic accompaniment:

    Just for fun I tried out the M-audio keyboard controller I got last week to play the software instruments in GarageBand on my iMac and had a go at the fretless bass part and added some lead fills. The timings quite a bit out to the original and I haven't got any sort of voice for a vocal part where Roy's lovely ethereal vocal comes in so added some very loose Strat lead to sort of pad the gap. Experimented with different mixes while I was about it ... here's a link to the first ambient mix:

    Here's another mix ... this one's for Shaun :sifone: :wink: ... psychedelic mix:

    It's just a bit of fun :biggrin:
