Stormcock Song Club

I've had an idea - be warned! - and I wonder what others think.

You all probably know (well, UK'ers will) of Richard and Judy's Book Club? Well what about a Stormcock Song Club?

Each month a song of either Roy's or Nick's (Roy one month, Nick the next, then Roy and so on) is chosen by one of us (a different member each month) for everyone to listen to and discuss its lyrics, merit, what it might be about, what we like about it, the guitar bits(!), etc etc.

This may give an opportunity to listen to songs that perhaps we have never really listened to or liked before in a new way.

    What does the panel think?

I think this is a brilliant idea!

bigchris Aye lad, I knew you had it in you

well it might be an idea ... but not a new one for stormcockers ... a similar exercise was done a while back on the old email list ... got a lot of really good stuff ( to start of with ) .... but petered out eventually !!

I know there are various people on this new forum that seem to have the time to right lots of posts ( usually about anything but Nick and Roy ) ... so this might be an idea to channel their thoughts ... and get a bit more relevant !?!

    Critical mass!

I like the idea, but I could talk about any Roy song I know for a quite a while, so be warned! I was even thinking of writing my own reviews, song by song once I finish my collection (if that's possible). At the rate of one song a month, Roy would be in his mid eighties by the time we're done, and he'll (hopefully) have ten more albums by then.

Do we start with obscure ones like "Ladybird?" or stunners like "Hangman?" Do you need to own THE BOOK (I do!)?

Who chooses who gets to choose the song? Do we get to vote, will Roy give the ultimate rulings (that'd be cool!).

Do we observe Robert's Rules of Order?

It'd be nice to find a "critical mass" of Stormcockers to make it work!

Any member can choose any song they want.

I propose it changes on the 1st of each month, mainly to know where we are.

Towards the end of the month the first member to post their wish to do the following month's song (first come, first served) can do so. Bearing in mind that it will be a Roy/Nick song on alternate months: six each per year (if it keeps up!)

    Can I bagsy starting though?!

    S.O.T.M.Club

Is that Queen's Engrisch (sic) for you want the first pick?

I already voted today, but since you suggested it (at least this time, according to BC) I have no objections. Don't think it's my decision, though. Shouldn't Paul add a new portal dedicated to the SONG OF THE MONTH?

Close to my 125th post. Scary...

I'll set up a "Song of the Month" forum in a bit. This forum will be heavily policed...

When we did a similar effort on the email list moons ago we had the existing nominee choose the next person. So, we'll start with HarperPR this month with her pick of songs (from either artist, it doesn't matter who we start with) and at the end of the month she can pick the next person who's interested in doing one, and I'd suggest they let her know via private message that they want to do it.

    Sound workable?

On reflection, I think it is better to have the monthly discussions in this forum (Words and Music) to avoid cluttering up the forum list with more stuff. This forum seems ideal for the purpose and is under used anyway...

I'm cool with everything in previous two posts. I will away to listen to my 'Song for November' and post in next day or two. (If you know me well enough you might already know what I will kick off with!)

    Let's Play!

Makes me think of your response to one of my first posts, a personal fave from '75 and the first Roy I ever heard!

    Song for December

I have to hand over the baton come Dec 1, so any offers for the honour? Remember, December is Roy song month.

Bob Jacobs Ride away in style

I listened to One For All today as it came up on the iPod. It's got some great guitar twiddling but I didn't notice the words... Perhaps I should look them up and we can discuss that?

No obligation, NC, but I think you may be itching to discuss a Roy song!:)

So...if you want to start a new thread Dec 1 or later - the floor's yours.

If You're not ALL sick of me by now.

Look at the TIME. Almost missed your post this time around.

I've been thinking of adding more musical (versus lyrical) commentary to my post for BTPMITG. I was waiting for the CD to hear it first.

And I admit I've thought of what ROY song(s) I would pick. I don't know what songs were discussed in previous attempts... Don't want to duplicate. (does anyone want to PM a list?)

I think HarperPR and I would like to see more DEBATE about what songs meanings are to different listeners. There is also the experience of listening to great music without trying to dissect it for meaning as I tend to do.

On a humorous note, the writer in me imagines my commentary being added to various announcements of Nick and Roy's music without my knowledge until one day a Beeb News Crew knocks on my door, having discovered my true identity (which I haven't really hidden. Also, the writer in me just loves IRONY).

If there are no objections, I'll aim to make my pick in a couple days. Jack.

    I made my choice!

Itching? Roy's like a case of poison ivy that won't go away... but in a GOOD way!

With that, I blame HarperPR for inspiring me (egging me on?) to post what may be the single longest post in STORMCOCK history, even after you subtract Roy's lyrics.

I hope it's a good sign that our number of active members has recently had an uptick after a multiple-month slide mirroring the world economy. I was beginning to have an inferiority complex!...
